Funny because I'm looking at the instructions and I can't find for the love of me any mention to alignment with an SDR or a TV sweeping generator...

Sorry, what You are doing here is not an aligment, it is a trial and error method ! You have the instructions to align but You mess around till something comes out of the radio ! Very unprofessional !
