Collecting Wild Mushrooms in Rural Thailand

Today, we were walking around the farm when Toon's keen foraging eye spotted some wild mushrooms growing.

Not one to turn her nose up at free fungi, Toon started quickly collecting wild mushrooms.

Some of the fungi were quite tricky to get to as they grew in deep crevasses, but there was no escape. Toon soon dug them out.

Knowing which wild mushrooms you can eat is incredibly important, and although Toon was sure that these fungi were edible, we thought it best to get them identified before cooking them up.

As it transpires, our newfound wild fungi are edible and identified as the relatively rare Elephant Foot wild mushroom.

Later that night, we tucked into a tasty pork & mushroom curry.

This wild mushroom has quite a strong taste with a hint of Mother Earth thrown into the mix.

Nice find, when I lived in the mountains we would forage for mushrooms as soon as the rains came in the spring, and then hunt them all summer. We were taught to thump around the top of it before we picked it to release the spores, it seemed to work because there were always more later in the year. I bet that pork curry was delicious with the mushrooms. Thanks for sharing. Many blessings to you and Toon🙏
Cheers 🍻

I’ve seen mushrooms being grown in hanging bags inside plastic tunnels in Vietnam . They seem to be thriving, maybe it could be a profitable venture, but your reading from someone who knows sweet FA about growing anything. Food for thought ( pardon the Pun ) . Good luck .

Hey mate after watching you and Toon since day dot, , I think you have a gold mine, , , Look into it, , Go and get a price on a truck load say 4, 5,or 6 or more cubic m of Gravel that's what we call it in Aussie the little red round stone that is all over your farm, , ours has some but i used it to make a driveway to our land, , the wife's father when alive used to dig it out and sell it, , , before he sold the land onto his sister then we brought it back, , I think you and toon could sell a shit load of it because you have a shit load of it, , and it is not cheap, , , let me know if it is good for you guys to do it, ,

You harvested these 'shrooms correctly. They will return because you left the "root" system. Mark the location with something so you can remember where they grow. This is where Toon shows us how to make a Thai Mushroom Omelet, the second easiest Thai dish. Add some fake crab and you are eating like a king. Do not let the aquatic goats know where the 'shrooms grow.
