Be Opened! - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon

Friends, our Gospel for today is the evocative scene of Jesus healing a man who cannot hear and cannot speak. This man is beautifully symbolic of many in our culture today: we don’t listen to God, and therefore we can’t speak clearly about God. To us, as to him, Jesus says, “Ephphatha!”—be opened to the Word of God!

It has now been a year since my wife passed away. I have not heard her voice nor has she spoken to me for a year. Every time her muted silence sinks derp into my 80 year old heart, I hear Jesus’s voice « Father I commend my spirit to you ». So, I repeat it: « Father, I commend my wife to you. ». Hearing Christ’s surrendering of Himself to the Father enables me to speak out my own surrendering of Monique to our Father. And that, in itself, is a small miracle from God that keeps me opened to Him while remaining unconsolable.

Ekklesia. I confirm the explanation as a Greek. A very dear word to me... And i have to say that I first heard the voice and visited a Church as the home of God in August 2022. The Church was dedicated to the Annunciation of Holy Mary and the day was the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ. This homily reminds me of Bishop Barron's oration at the National Eucharistic Congress, in which he said for the lay, obedience means listening to the voice of God. It's a blessing that the Church gives us a healthy obligation to attend Sunday Mass so we can step away from the world and plug into the voice of God.
