I'm completely deaf in one ear from birth, and I've had people ask if I've looked into surgery to get my hearing fixed as well.

My hearing aids are blue tooth capatable so I listen to music on my phone. In church I watch the lead singer but if i dont know the hymn my cousin sits next to me and I can put my hand on her back to feel how and when to sing. She holds the book and follows along with her finger for me.

It's so weird that people think that you can just take your ears into the ear mechanic and then then ear mechanic does a little diagnostic and puts the right parts in the places and then all the sudden your ears and everything else that goes into hearing are "fixed."

It depends on what kind of deafness. I had conductive hearing loss due to some issues with the bones in my left ear. I was able to get surgery to fix the shape of the bones and restore conduction. Unfortunately in my case I ended up with scar tissue forming that later on caused me to lose my hearing again in that ear, but for this issue, it can sometimes be resolved with surgery

My niece is deaf and has cochlear implants. If that’s the surgery they’re talking about, it doesn’t “fix” your hearing! Yes, she can hear but it’s totally different. She still has to use closed captioning, doesn’t matter the volume. She hates swimming bc she has to take them out, but then she can’t talk to her friends bc she can’t hear them. She hates family parties bc we all talk over each other, and she can’t discern what’s being said. But of course, we’re too self absorbed to recognize that. Or to realize she’s in a corner doing her own thing bc she’s unable to be a part of the chaotic conversation (and probably bc she’s 13 and we’re “old”). It was killing me to see this, so after a few chats with her last year, I now try to include her in ways she says helps her (I would imagine they’re different for everyone). But I’m not perfect at it. 1) If there’s a conversation we’re both a part of, I try to keep it less chaotic. 2) I speak at a volume she says is most comfortable for her. 3) I enunciate!! ( I’ve always made that a priority bc I knew it was a problem for her). 4) I try to keep a clear line of vision with us bc her ability to understand people is 60% lip reading. So yeah, there isn’t a miracle surgery to fix hearing 🙄

I’m fully deaf from birth and I have a cochlea implant and with the help of two processors I can hear a bit below average but to the point where I don’t even know Australian sign language or need to use cc, but idk if that’s possible in America cuz that place is kinda special.

My 5 month old daughter is hard of hearing and wears aids. The amount of conversations I have saying her hearing aids is her only solution is insane and it would take a medical miracle for her to hear on her own lol

They cant get their ears fixed, but they could get cochlear implants. What happens is the sound gets bypassed and goes straight to the brain instead of going thru the “process” that hearing people have. Idk what it’s like because I’m not deaf, i have mod-severe bilateral hearing loss and wear hearing aids. What I do know is when the implants are off, they hear nothing. The implants have to be worn for them to hear.

Hi, did you know that Denmark’s biggest music award (the Sonning Award) was given to a deaf Scottish percussionist this year 2023. She collaborates with all kinds of musicians all over the place and she says that she taught herself to hear with other parts of her body. I think it is very cool and it reminded me of you because you also inspire😊❤❤❤

My mom was deaf until a new doc, right out of med school, suggested a surgery that could help. It worked and had excellent hearing for the last 30 years of her life.

I understand how that feels, even if you put the music up at max you still can’t hear it, you can only hear mumbles.

sometimes you can perform tympanoplasty and it works rarely and to some effect but it does work.
