What is an EIN? Employer Identification Numbers Explained

If the business is just me, do I need an Employer Identification Number? Is an FEIN, EIN, Federal Tax ID the same thing? I obtained an EIN with my sole proprietorship, can I use it for my new LLC? Where can I get an EIN and how long does it take?
