You should have calculated the eigenvalues of AAT which is a 2x2 matrix, as opposed to ATA which is 3x3. They are the same, and it would have been a bit easier.

What if eigen value comes negative.. . As the square root of negative value is complex

You should mention the the eigenvalues are real and non-negative since the matrix A^T A is symmetric as well as square. Otherwise the method would not work in general.
