Ignore 'history marketing' when buying a new watch.

Is there a major watch brand out there that doesn’t completely milk its history?

When buying a new watch, my recommendation… Ignore the smoke and mirrors:

👀 A lot of this ‘history’ has been manufactured. If it is true, it’s been hugely amplified.

⌚️Focus on the product itself.

💰Do you like it? Can you afford it? Does it fit your wrist?

While yes, the history of a brand and a product is definitely important, it’s the quickest way to fall into a trap of justifying your purchase.

History is definitely a factor I consider, even where there may be BS.

Exactly how I felt when I watched your video on the new plastic $1300 crap watch.

Spot on. Having been sucked into marketing from the major Swiss brands when buying watches for years, I’ve just bought a Christopher Ward C60 Trident Pro 300. Black dial/bezel 40mm diver with perfect dimensions. I couldn’t be happier as it’s perfect for me and so much watch for £900! Great short video 🙌🏽

That was very well put, Adrian. People are so preoccupied with buying a watch for the prestige factor, and that is why they get swayed by the historical pedigree of a watch brand. Like any other manufactured products, the history of a product or brand is no guarantee of its quality TODAY, because quality control and management philosophy of these companies change over time. Case in point. You go back far enough in horological history and no one would consider the Japanese a big competitor for luxury time pieces. Yet, in the past two decades, Grand Seiko makes watches that are every bit as luxurious and as of high quality, or even higher quality, than many famed Swiss watch makers.

Generally agree. Rolex overstated, but something like Longines understated.

Exactly! This is my approach to almost every product I buy. If I like the product, I do my research and don't give a ???? about the history and marketing cost. Product quality and customer service are the 2 critical elements when buying any thing.

Then for starters you should take down your year old video about Tudor ranger. You spent the first half waxing eloquent about some British polar expedition undertaken with Tudor watches some 50 years ago. I understand you are trying to cash in on your popularity and following.
Promote newer brands and crappy watches from Tag (i love Tag btw just not the kith stuff). Thats where the money is after all. But for the sake of your own reputation, can you stop contradicting yourself so much and appearing like a complete sellout. I don’t take watch reviews and reviewers too seriously but there is still a bar dude. Come on

There are so many “quality watches” out there. History and herotage is a factor that gives some watches an edge.

I fully agree with you. By the way we are big fans of exp2. It is my favorite watch in Rolex current catalog. When i saw the 216570 in black dial in 2011 I fell in love instantly. Finally in 2016 I pulled the trigger on 216570 black dial and love black paint at the base of the hands, don't know why they left it out in 226570 . Then in 2022 I bought the 226570 polar. But the black dial 216570 remains my favorite with its maxi lugs while very body seems to favor 226570 polar. I'm very picky on watches, I have been collecting for 30 years. From Rolex I like mostly and own the less popular once like dssd JC, sd43 and two exp2. I own a steel ceramic bezel Daytona black dial but never managed to develop a connection with it. I only buy new or NOS from Breguet, Blancpain, Zenith, Jaeger and lately LU chopard time traveller one because I love worldtimers and gmt's like the exp2 not the gmt master, looks too mutch like a sub and hate the shiny center link. I also developed a taste for Tudor got the 41mm gmt and the 41mm BB chrono panda. I really like your videos👏

My favorite watch, the one I ware almost every day is an inexpensive Chinese sub-mariner knock off. It's made extremely well. It's 316L stainless, NH35A movement, sapphire Chrystal, ceramic bezel, it keeps excellent time and looks great on a Jubilee bracelet. And it cost me less than $70.00 USD. I love this Steeldive watch.

History/story isn’t everything, but it certainly adds to my wearing experience. BB54, Ball Trainmaster, Hamilton Khaki, Hanhart chrono, Timex Marlin, Bucherer Manero are just a few examples. I’ve a few micros as well, but from brands that have, albeit recent, history.

Give the Chinese watch industry another 5 years and the only thing left separating Rolex from a $1, 000 Chinese watch will be history.

I like the hesalite Speedmaster, I intend to buy one, in spite of all the *moon* nonsense, because I like the way it sits in my wrist, and nothing else.

The trouble is the hype brands are what people want and they hold value.

That’s the reason we should ditch the Paul Newman bullsh’t.

Absolutely true. But I don’t blame them. They’re just trying to make money. We just need to be informed consumers. Otherwise you may not even realize that you’re throwing away your money.

Nike spend double their production budget on advertising. You sell ideas to people... Why are watches any different...?

Well, obvious might not be obvious and any advertising is not just advertising … history of watch to me depicts the mastery of making it and expertise and service etc. How many of generic watch brands just copy inside out those who have pioneered it. Heritage IMHO is also about confidence and in watch world there is so many copies and so called homage brands … would they exist without the originals? We can talk about advertising hours but It ain’t different at watch world as at any other products. Weather we like or not we do follow the advertising even subconsciously… how many buy “unknown” brand chronographs just because they look like Daytona or Moonwatch ?! 🤔🤷 … cheers to you all 🍀👋🌞

this is absolutely spot-on. Many many many many watches have been to the top of Everest many have been to space. Many are very accurate. Rolex did not really invent much of anything except the name they got other people to do it.
