Could William be in a black cowboy hat because he went inside the Sublime to get Clem? In the trailer he was riding a horse towards the tear in the sky above the dam that marks an entrance to the Sublime suggesting that he'll eventually get there one way or the other. And Clem seems to be a host on a loop in a world she created for herself due to the vase with withered flowers.
