What was the first light in Genesis 1?

What is the mysterious light in the famous verse from Genesis where God said "Let There Be Light?" On first read, you might think it refers to the sun. However... the sun has not been created yet. According to Genesis Chapter 1, God did not create the sun until the 4th day of Creation. So what was this earlier light and where did it come from? There could be a clue in ancient literature. In the Bible and in other ancient writings from the Old Testament period, "darkness" was a metaphor for chaos and death. Could this help us figure out how to interpret the light from Genesis 1:3? Let's study this verse and see. So what do you think the light represents? Let me know in the comments!

Genesis 1:1-5 (ESV): 1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

Darkness is a manifestation of evil, the negativity and light is the manifestation of Jesus, positivity.
Light also denotes knowledge of God and darkness denotes knowledge of evil.

I think God probably restored the sun, moon, and stars on the first day. If the earth was a semi-opaque, watery mess, then light would have been diffracted and obscured by the soil suspended in the water. Perhaps the separation of light from darkness involved the soil sinking to the bottom.

On the fourth day, the Hebrew word, 'ashah was used. I'm not sure it necessarily has to mean creation in the same way as barah. It could be that cloud cover was broken so that the luminaries could be made visible.

If we go with Augustine's idea, it implies that metaphysical light is a created property. Would that mean that at one point God had no light and had to create it?

Light gives order, law and ability for matter to act and be acted upon. When the word is spoken, matter obeys and can be organized

If darkness is chaos, light would have to be structure or order. Order out of chaos.
