SpongeBob SquarePants is confirmed to be on the spectrum, as revealed by SpongeBob voice actor Tom Kenny. Since his debut on Nickelodeon 25 years ago, SpongeBob has acted a bit different than everyone else. This explains why he does the things he does, but Tom wants people to know that's a strength instead of a weakness.

Stephen Hillenburg loved life so much, he created the best cartoon character in existence.

Fun fact. Sea sponges can live up to 200 years or more. So that could explain why Spongebob acts like a kid even though he’s an adult. He’s old enough to be considered an adult. But as a sponge, he’s still a kid.

As an autistic person, I'm sad to see people are calling tom a liberal for having autistic characters

I’m diagnosed with Asperger’s, which is on the autistic spectrum, and I used to watch SpongeBob as a kid. After listening to this, I have to say major respect to Tom Kenny and I’m so glad that SpongeBob is a character that proves to be a representation of the younger audience who watch the series! Love this!

I was diagnosed with autism at three years old, and now I realise that I have that in common with SpongeBob.

As an autistic myself, I definitely like this, but I’m just gonna say this myself… *I don’t think “superpower” is the best word to describe autism*

Knowing SpongeBob for a long time, I never thought he had autism. But now hearing that, it makes me happy that SpongeBob is autistic because I am autistic as well and I think he can be a great example to tell people that having disabilities can be your superpower

I knew there was a reason Spongebob always stuck with me so well . I'm autistic myself and have always saw some sides of myself in Spongebob, so to hear this is wonderful .

“Spongebob doesn’t seem to have an angry bone in his body”

Can You Spare a Dime and Krusty Love proved otherwise.

Honestly as an autistic person this is actually really wholesome to me. I always kind of knew but to hear it confirmed is pretty cool

As a person on the autism spectrum who loves cartoon characters, it makes me happy to see a very famous cartoon character, one who is a global phenomenon, with it. Im not really a spongebob fan but i still find this cool.

As a person with autism myself, this is SO MUCH relatable.

EDIT: I can't believe it, it's true! My comment reached a thousand likes!

As someone who watches SpongeBob as a kid, I didn't know until now. And I have autism myself, so it warms my heart he's on the spectrum too.

As an autistic person myself, this has made my life a bit more childish and wonderful in the best way possible.

EDIT: holy shit this blew up fast.

I always feel weird about ‘X CHARACTER COMFIRMED TO HAVE X THING.’ Such as being autistic, as I’m autistic myself. I always felt like most peeps are using it to get brownie points with audiences or something. It’s mostly something coming from a company’s mouth instead of the creator, so you won’t hear it being mentioned in the series…

This is a bit different. Tom is likely playing SpongeBob how he sees him, an actor can make their own judgements and the creators can say if it’s true or not. This likely isn’t canon, just how Tom thinks Bob is. Honestly this makes sense, long as SpongeBob doesn’t do anything that’s just a bad autistic stereotype at this point (which is hard seeing he’s pretty much done everything at this point before we had any confirmation of autism), so basically this should be fine.
