For anyone interested. The pockets on the military canteen are small because they are for purification tabs. At least, that's what I was told when I was in.

Mine is all Milsurp old school stuff. No velcro here, snaps and Alice clips only. Everything nests together and fits in the canteen cover. On the bottom of the canteen

I use a G.I. set up myself.
But I have replaced the gov. Issue canteen with a Nalgine.
And I'm using a canteen cup from 1943.
Thanks for a great gear comparison. 👍

I've used a surplus British set of nesting rectangular mess tins and a metal canteen since I was in the Souts. They're probably from the 60s or 70s, I got them in the late 80s. I've never needed to look into getting anything else because they've simply never failed me!

The only issue I've ever had is that current size of heat-in-the-bag British rations are too big to be boiled in even the biggest mess tin, but I don't use them that often and with a little water added to prevent burning you can just cook the contents in the tin like you would anything else.

I have used and will continue to use the military surplus. For the cost and the fact it's made on this side of the pond, I'm more than happy with it.

Although I have dyed my canvas black, in my little brain it blends in with the rest of my kit I carry around town better.

An often overlooked consideration, is that in non permissive (I.e. no martinis allowed) environments, like hot springs resorts, no one can see what’s in your g.i. canteen. It’s hard to explain to the staff why there are olives in ones water bottle.

I have the old style canteen cup with a 32oz large mouth stainless steel klean kanteen.
I also carry 800ml swiss canteen in plastic.
I put it all in my pack, no pouchs.

My pick is the civilian kit. The Nalgene bottle doesn´t leave plastic taste in the water and I don´t need the feature for the gas mask. My canteen cup came with a lid. An alternative setup is the Nalgene wide mouth bottle and Tatonka cup with a fitting pouch. I use both setups regularly.

I have both military surplus and civilian replica gear. But i buy European brands replica (usually Mil Tec, they also produce for the Bundeswehr) so they guarantee the safety. In my experience the surplus even if 40 years old will last longer and be better thought about as you can see from the pockets on yours. Thanks for the video and have a wonderful weekend.

I am not doing re-enacting so I started with U.S. GI equipment added a Nalgene canteen mixed that with some good old Boy Scout stuff and I'm pretty happy with the results. That doesn't mean there's not room for improvement. It's just where I'm at now.

Currently using the standard milsurp because it’s what I have, but the Pathfinder canteen kit is really on my wishlist.

I’ve always used and have the military surplus GI canteen and, both Alice and Mollie pouches. I’ve also gotten a few of the nalgene in my surplus pouches. The GI pilot flask canteens are nice, I have two of them

I'm an advocate for mix and match. I like the Nalgene over the original. One thing about the steel canteens I've noticed is the ring around the outside. I don't understand the purpose or the reasoning. You can buy welding tanks that are all one piece and seamless. Seems that gunk could collect around the inside of the ring.

I prefer the Military set up. As i use them a lot. I've got a good stock of them thats how much i like them. Also the Arctic cold weather G.I. canteen and cup. Top notch!.👌👍

I wish they had the modern pouch but the old closure over the canteen. The new one just lets too much dirt and debris into the pouch and canteen cup.

I have multiple military canteens that I've used for decades. My only change would be to try the Nalgene bottle with a milsurp cap. I like the idea of "see through", but would want the more durable cap.
