Compare this to the description in the play, in which Mozart recognizes the spiritual purpose of his music. Here, Mozart comes across as a pure music geek, inventing for the sake of novelty and advancement of the art, while Mozart in the play clearly sees what this kind of music *means* and is *doing* . I imagine this change was to make Mozart less sympathetic, but I wish the film had not taken away Mozart’s recognition that he is trying to show his *audience* the world as God might hear it.

Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one that finds how funny the beginning of this scene is. Mostly because of how the emperor rolls his eyes when Mozart takes a bow coming into the room. Then the way he says “gentlemen sit down”.
