Why I removed BLACK SAND and How I remove surface OIL FILM | Ep.7 Nano Reef Competition

In this episode, I decide to change the CaribSea Hawaiian Black sand after receiving an ICP test with Fauna Marin, the results in the metal section worry me a little bit too much.
I went back with the CaribSea Fiji pink that I use very often. One of the problems I knew I might get with the design of my aquarium was to have some oil film at the surface of the water so I decide to change a little bit the design of my aquarium to make the skimming of this natural.
Did it work? Only one way to find out: Watch the video :D

The dimension of this AIO Nano aquarium:
60x30x20cm 36L (24x12x8") 9G

Amazing work sir! And good thought on ICPing the sand... much better to find out now than later!

Really enjoying this series. There is definitely satisfaction in designing something yourself and making it work. The struggles make success that much better.

I agree with others that your video skills are very good. This style of video is much more cinematic compared to a normal vlog.

I am still working thru the series but I hope you win something because you definitely deserve it.

I dunno why but I cheered and was proud when you managed to skim the surface, that was a very smart idea

Have you considered that your pump is sending more water into the display than your intake can swallow?

A random flow nozzle would certainly help with surface turbulence and flow

Hey! Super awesome vid, editing and music choice, was wondering what black sand you used ? I have some in my new lagoon, just sent an ICP test out so waiting on the results there, got a horrible algae outbreak but it’s under control now..

I suspect the high element content came from the aqua epoxy, a common filler is aluminium oxide . Or from the rocks, if the rocks are made with cement and shell.

What size hole is in the acrylic where the return line comes through the back panel and what size baffle is it that you screwed in there I’m looking for something like that to make a flush look

Any chance you had a control sample you sent in with the tank ICP sample? (i.e. newly made saltwater not exposed to the black sand yet) Also, did you happen to run through your sand with some neodymium rare earth magnets? (wondering if magnetic flecks had been isolated from general composition or not)

I replaced my black sand for the same reason a month ago, but I didn't test just research online and seen having a lot of algea issues I decided to swap

Ahhh you're going backwards man! Lol I guess it's totally your call to make the change but I think you may have over reacted. I used the CaribSea Aragalive Hawaii Black Gravel 8 weeks ago to start my tank and have have no issues. Not sure if that was the substrate you used. Had my ugly stage at about the 3-4 week mark and it was gone in 5 days because I used various products from Brightwell Aquatics to combat it. Had it come back once again for about 7 days recently but it's because I was over feeding my corals. Once again Brightwell to the rescue and it's back to crystal clear again. It's too bad you changed. I love the black substrate look. Tank still looks good though! Love watching your videos. Why didn't you use a vacuum when you were cutting?? If I would have known the Duetto was so small I would have went with that over the Reef Breeders ATO. Looks good tho man 👌🏻I can see you really like to tinker!

How you now it come from the sand? And maybe just a the beginning, with water changes it may be better over time?

I wouldnt show a questionable method of surface skimming to the masses. Although that was a good way to increase height of water in the display, nice thinking! You know how many people are about to flood their homes? These AIOs are meant 90% for newer reefers. So half of them are about to be screamed at by their significant other and the other half are about to pay if they live on a second floor apartment complex. Only 1-2 gallons though.

Increase water agitation, lower display water height to the designed level. Approximately .5-1" below tank rim.

And will need a skimmer to pull the organic material out or willl likely continue.
