(9 Feb 2023) The next big thing in nuclear power could be tiny — little reactors that are far smaller and far cheaper than the traditional massive nuclear plants topped by giant concrete cooling towers. (AP Video: Lekan Oyekanmi and Angie Wang. Produced by: Teresa de Miguel)

"Traditional nuclear power costs billions of dollars...Total cost microreactor is under 100 million". Traditional nuclear power plants are thousands of megawatts not 20.

Having lived on a nuclear submarine, I can tell you that the power is great and RARELY dangerous. I think when negating new science, a person needs to use factual statements, not vague words.

WHEN DO WE SEE ONE BUILT AND POWERING A TOWN?

Lot's of people seem to be stuck in the past. Use your brains people this isn't 1980's Soviet Russia. We've gotten safer designs and protocols.

Does it include a Homer Simpson to run it? Or is it one Homer per dozen reactors?

For Comparison: 10 of these could support Denver International Airport and overnighted from Westiinghouse and installed all within 1 month. In total it would cover 1 acre vs 56 acres of solar panels "gross configuration" 1.7gigawatts per year. And could be replaced in less than a week every 5-8 years.

The micro reactors will need more highly enriched Uranium to keep the smaller profile in check. The NRC will not go for that IMO.

I’m sure a tornado will never hit one… 🤔

"Union of concerned scientists" sounds like a pessimist think tank.

They were suppose to build one for testing at the National Lab in Idaho, but ran out of money.

Looks great. I have been advocating nuclear power since the 1980s. These little reactors are perfect.

Question?
What about the waste?
Could this be the NEXT startup business?

That anti human commenter at the end (I say anti human because energy is being litigated out of the price of the poor, or replaced with methods that are too expensive) better not be trying to say solar and wind is any better. Most people have no idea that with a wind/solar system, there needs to be a conventional system running in the background to ensure a steady supply. It’s terribly expensive, and doesn’t help anything.
Nuclear is a little scary for sure, but the waste is so so tiny compared to other systems, and the cost would come down dramatically with time. Every new tech is expensive at first.

how is this any different from the nuclear reactors navy ships use?

conservation is the answer. Not a bunch of mini nuclear reactors just waiting to destroy the surrounding landscape.

When I hear the word micro I think of something small. I’m thinking of one setting on the side of my house next to my air conditioner.

Edwin lyman 😂mad cause he wants solar panels and wind turbines that are not even a continuous power source small module reactors are a amazing idea especially for remote military bases

False. That's just a silver box and that's all it'll ever be. Where are the 'micro reactors' they expected to see operating in 2024? 🤔

I want one to power my house and shop. No more money to the utility company.
