George Armstrong Custer remains a widely recognized figure in American history and enduring popular mythology, even long after his demise at the hands of Lakota and Cheyenne warriors during the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
Custer was born in New Rumley, Ohio, but his early years were primarily spent in Monroe, Michigan. Although he attended West Point after high school, his academic performance left much to be desired. Notably, he faced a court-martial for failing to intervene in a cadet altercation shortly after graduating at the bottom of his class. However, the outbreak of the Civil War prevented his punishment, as the military urgently needed officers.
During the Civil War, Custer participated in the First Battle of Bull Run and distinguished himself in campaigns in Virginia and Gettysburg. Despite his units enduring high casualties, his fearless approach in battle earned the admiration of his superiors. His cavalry played a pivotal role in compelling Confederate General Robert E. Lee's forces to retreat. In recognition of his contributions, General Philip Sheridan gifted Custer and his wife, Elizabeth Bacon Custer, the Appomattox "surrender table."
