all she needed was a skincare routine and an eyebrow tint 💀

This comic taught me that beautiful people can’t like nerdy things 👍🏻

damn she isn't even that ugly without the makeup lol, she just looks normal

The reason why I was team Suho when I was reading the webtoon was because he always knew how she looked without makeup and still treated her the same and liked her. I just wish the main character realized and understood that so she didn’t stay so insecure throughout

Anyone find it weird that her being "ugly" is... just looking like a normal Korean woman? Weird messaging...

I read True Beauty beginning to end and like...
⚠️SPOILERS⚠️
The MC goes back and forth with "development" for 200+ chapters and really doesn't truly learn the lesson of loving her true face until the very last few episodes and she doesn't even expose her true face on her own, someone else does it for her.

She runs away and then all her celeb friends show their bare faces too so THEN she's okay with it. So she really didn't learn anything the whole comic and other people had to do the courageous thing, not her. If you want a better makeup related comic, The makeup remover is way better with the same theme :')

i feel like the english translation for true beauty did the webtoon even WORSE LMFAOO.

the original korean title translates to 'Secret of the Angel', which personally makes WAY more sense because 'True Beauty' was truly never about 'self love' like it was advertised. it's mainly some self insert by the author ☠️

When I started reading True Beauty, I thought it would be about how crazy beauty standards are and that the main character would eventually overcome her insecurities. But nope!

On the other hand, Spirit Fingers gave me everything I wanted from True Beauty and more. It's probably my favorite webtoon.

If you want a story that *actually* delivers this message, read The Makeup Remover. It’s great, I loved it all the way till the end. (Though the ending was a bit rushed…)

As someone who read all of True Beauty; it should be said the downfall is that its just too long and drags out. I like it, sort of. If it was shorter, and the story didn't wander, it could've been a nice close and shut story :)

True Beauty's girl isn't even ugly, she just needs a good skincare and that's all. Looking at the art style somehow I knew it's going to take shallow dive into a topic like that.
Funny enough there was an article by koreans who were complaining why high schoolers looks like models in this comic and that it's settings an unrealistic expectation.

But anyone if interested in similar comic but with actual substance read Cursed Princess Club. It's best! It's funny, wholesome and heals you!

Another comic will recommend is Escape Room. It's not same gener as CPC rather it's survival, psychological. It has great plot and MC has extremely high IQ but only high IQ. Definitely u will love the twist and turn. I am just letting it out bcs I loved it.

I read this as an insecure teen because I thought it'd help. All it did was make me hate myself more because the moral was "yes i love my ugly self but i still cake it on my face and all other uggos dont get this escape from mistreatment because they cant/dont wear makeup 🥰🌸✨️"

[Spoilers]

One of the things I hate most about this Webtoon is that Jugyeong's love of comics and horror pretty much never gets brought up again after the initial arc.

I've read the whole thing, and it gets mentioned maybe once toward the end? But it's disheartening to see that she decides to hide her niche interests and then... actually does it. After that, all her personality is is, "I love makeup! Which boy do I like?" and just being cloyingly nice to everyone so every conflict she's in is just her being a poor victim of unfortunate circumstances. She has no agency other than, "This person is being so mean to me/my friend for no reason, except that they are terrible! I'm going to [do something clever and borderline deus ex machina about it|cry until someone else does something about it]!" She doesn't really DO anything. Things happen TO her.

Hell, even the whole, "I'm ugly without makeup" plotline goes STRAIGHT out the window for a good, long while in favor of her love triangle and social media drama.

And then, the big moment we've all been waiting for, the entire climax of the series where Jugyeong's real, bare face gets revealed to the world after she becomes a big social media star... finally happens. And it's a problem for like 1 or 2 episodes before another character comes to her rescue. Then it's over, everyone loves her again, she gets engaged to Suho, blah blah blah.

Anyway, rant about her lack of character over. For all intents and purposes, she severely alters her personality to make her more relatable to those around her, and never goes back. She makes a couple of friends — important side characters with their own names and distinct personalities — by acting like a different person, and NEVER ends up telling them that she likes nerd things. I think the closest she gets is when she starts her own YouTube channel at the very end and does some monster makeup tutorials, but that's it. We never get a moment where her friends even say anything like, "Wow, I didn't know you like that stuff. You don't seem like the type. But it's cool that you do, girlboss!" Let alone the reactions of disgust and othering that Jugyeong expected. Completely abandoned plot line.

She never goes back to the comic shop, always wears the same trendy/basic clothing that she only wore in the first place because that's what everyone expected of her... Boo.

(Not that there's anything wrong with trendy or basic, it's just another example of how she had absolutely no character development and stuck with the fake personality she developed in order to make people like her.)

... and yes, I do have a lot of feelings about this comic after following it for so long just to see when it would eventually get better. If I could tell my younger self, "Don't bother, it makes all of the most predictable and frustrating narrative choices possible, " I wouldn't have stuck with it lol

She's not even ugly. I'm so tired of "girl wears glasses? Doesn't let her hair down? No makeup? GOD SHE HAS TO BE UGLY"

Like can it be retired already?

Yeah, , , I couldnt get past reading True Beauty. It was pretty promising but went downhill fast. I was reading Lookism at the same time, a webtoon that also tackles beauty standards but instead for men, and decided to focus on that. That comic also got crazy, fast

I love the Cursed Princess Club comic. It's way better than True Beauty and Let's Play in my opinion. I can't wait for the next season.

(SPOILER) The red flag of this webtoon started for me when I read the part where she(mc) goes for blind dates after her breakup with Seojun. The irony and hypocrisy in her character clearly being shown as she rejects a guy because he looked different from his social media photos. And her reaction to that was just so WOW.... I still can't believe that a scene like that exists. I literally couldn't continue reading that webtoon after that. I'm so over that webtoon.
