Alrighty day 134! Today is Find Steed. Hi, does your mount keep dying? Do you have to buy a new horse after every encounter? Tired at being swindled by your local stable? Well worry not with todays spell, you'll never have to worry about your mount again!

Classes Available:
PHB: Paladin

Theoretically, you can have a crocodile mount on an ancient Egypt themed paladin. What thematic combo would you make?

Conquest paladin can use armor of agathys. Since most enemies will most likely attack mounts with their relatively low AC and HP, they are either going to attack the mount and take a ton of cold damage, or attack you instead of the mount thus protecting it.

Haste and Enlarge makes for really good combo if you have friends with the spell, Healing also can be cast on you and your mount at the same time. Mage armor in those times you've lost your gear, or a scavenger dungeon, when you are escaping a goblin camp.

there are 0 downsides for palladins to have this spell
it's indefinite time so they theoretically only ever have to cast it once

they're prepared casters so they don't even need to have it prepared

the Steed is another body on the board with its own actions assuming you are using it as a uncontrolled mount

you can pick qnd choose your animals according to your needs

large creatures can squeeze through areas medium creatures can move freely in

at higher levels the paladin is likely to swap to greater steed but regardless find steed is always good

when the paladin is buffed from an outside source it also targets the steed so like if the wizard casts haste/fly/etc etc

if it's used as a controlled mount then the palladin has the benefits of a rogue while it's alive since the mount can use the disengage and dash action
essentially fixing any movement speed issues the palladins got

and even if it's targeted the steed taking a hit that would of gone to a player is still good!

It's also a mile long walkie talkie! a familiar can only be communicated telepathicly up to 100 feet!

you can leave a dog or horse outside a place you wanna scout out in constant contact with the caster

this spell is fantastic

and to reiterate this spell only ever needs to be cast once!

its not only every range: self spell, things like haste etc. also affect your mount when you are affected. and i also disagree with your rating, find steed is very very good. you can longrest cast it (which is raw) that means you dont use a spellslot. and furthermore you should not smite with a 2nd level spellslot, its not worth it

tbh i don't see the disadvantage of it "using a spell slot". just summon your steed in your downtime? after all paladins can change their whole spell list every day

Its still good in dungeons cuz of sqeezing rules allowing to fit in spaces one size categorie smaller then the creature but movement counts as halfed

A little late. But lore bards can take this along with Tenser's transfornation.

I would like to note that steed survivability can be improved significantly by buying them barding, which has rules in the book!

A warhorse gets you a 60 Ft movement speed, and it can (if it's above you in initiative) rush to an enemy and use Trampling Charge on them, potentially knocking them prone and giving you advantage on all your attacks against them.

Also, if you're multiclassing paladin and rogue for some reason, the mount counts as an ally within 5 feet of the enemy for purposes of Sneak Attack.

2:15 I gave a dwarf paladin a Boar. Roughly the correct size for them. If you get a cow, it can then be a literal _holy cow._

Divine Favor would buff the mounts attacks as well as yours.
If you are multiclassing (or get this as a bard), you could do some funky shit:
Contingency: The mount also gets a contingency, though probably the same as you.
Dream: Bring your mount to someone else's dream.
Eyebite: The mount also gets to bite with it's eyes.
Expeditious Retreat: For when you need to move fast.
Magic Jar: You and your horse are now possessing someone?
Mirror Image: Both of you are harder to hit.
Wish: Grant yourself and your steed one wish each.
Tree Stride: Ride through trees.

Also, I understood this spell as though it is: "If a spell has range of Self, or it says it targets 'one creature within range' and you target yourself."

3:40 Well, the horse can be holy.

5 out of 10 feels low. Sure its situational, but there's still the squeeze rules if you really want to get it somewhere. Also you mentioned the spell is taking the place of a smite or heal or some other spell, which I honestly don't see as a big drawback. All you need is a single level 2 spell slot at the end of some day you have it prepared and then you're set until it dies. It's not like you need to cast it everyday.

If I were a dm, I'd rule that any mount/pet, that wasn't summoned, would gain the same hit die you gain when you level up as long as they continuously fight with you. For instance, a lvl 1 barbarian gets a horse and takes it in battle where the barbarian levels to level 2, id let the horse also get a d12 added to health when the barbarian levels up.
I'd also maybe let it get multi attack after the horse goes through enough where it'd get multi attack if it were able to take levels in classes that get multi attack. Might be a bit OP, but I hate the idea of a mount/pet from a players backstory getting one-shot on a 5th level encounter.
I'd also rule that the paladin gets to summon a cr1 creature if the use find familiar at lvl 3.

My biggest problem with this spell is that wording "Your steed serves you as a mount, both in combat and out, and you have an instinctive bond with it that allows you to fight as a seamless unit." By RAW a mount uses the Mounted Combat rules, which stipulate that either: Mount is controlled by Rider, OR Mount is independent and controls itself. Find Steed's wording might imply that something else is happening. For example, does that mount now get its independent attacks, since its intelligent and can control itself? But, telepathically the Rider still can command its mount to move as they direct, in effect making it a Controlled mount for purposes of RAW. I've had DMs go back and forth on this.

This spell is so broken on anything other than paladin. I had a sorcerer who gained an item that cast find steed. Him and his doggo would both end up with a breath weapon to shred target's health.

I think this spell is best used by lore bards. At lvl 6 they can grab this spell as well as ashdaralon‘s stride (FTD spell). If you get your hands onto a spellstoring item (if worst comes to worst you have this combo at least for lvl 11 via artificer). Bards get Kinetic jaunt as well. Starting to see the combo? You cast Find Stead. Then you store kinetic jaunt in your spell storing item. At the start of combat trigger both spells (using up your BA and A for this). You now have 210 ft of movement can run through creatures space dealing 2d6 fire damage to every creature run over and still can cast spells and attack and everything. This might be useful for a variety to the ghost lance build where you start as bard and then go into the ghostlance later. This combo isn’t as strong but its cool enough.

Edit: You have 300 ft. I thought war horses have 120 ft movement. They have 60. But still 300 ft is strong enough as well.

Edit 2: Maybe you don’t wanna go ghostlance with this build and rather go cavalier fighter. Or even give the spellstoring item to your cavalier fighter to give them an actual good mount.
Either way the possibilities are endless with find steed and find greater steed.

Can confirm every time I pulled out a horse it either died first round of combat or was immediately rendered useless

Do horseshoes count as weapons? Elk antlers are a natural weapon, that's for certain.

I think a cow would be an awesome steed.
