My Oakley sunglasses broke. Instead Of replacing the earpiece, I repaired them with super glue and baking soda.

The interesting thing about this is the chemistry behind it. Super Glue contains an acidic inhibitor. When it is exposed to the humidity in the air, the acid gets diluted and the glue cures. The alkaline Baking Soda both accelerates the curing (neutralizing the acidic inhibitor) and performs the same role as gravel does in concrete.

Fantastic trick! Although I am now walking around with 3 paper clips and a pair of Oakleys superglued to my head! Note: allow to dry first!

I used to work in a high-end violin repair shop, we're talking Stradivarius here. We used Hot Stuff (like crazy glue) to make hairline fractures disappear. Exact same process as this video but we used wood dust instead of baking soda. If the clients and buyers knew this they probably wouldn't be too pleased.

This is an awesome way to be able to keep using stuff that’s “broken” and preventing unnecessary garbage! Bravo!

For those of us who weren't aware of this, I thank you very much. Such a cool idea.

I have used this method to repair the inside door pulls on my 2007 GMC van. These internal parts are large plastic pieces, maybe 14, long that had broken into 5 pieces. First I glued them as usual with super glue, then I built up layers of superglue and baking soda. I think there was 11 to 13 inches of crack line that needed repair. Also a couple of cracked out holes that I rebuilt and reshaped. It has been well over a year and both doors are still holding up.

I used this to patch a huge crack in the plastic radiator on a freightliner semi truck several years ago. I used about 10 layers, but it held. I drove the truck from Phoenix to LA and back several times a week for a month and it never let loose.
Can't say what happened to it when I returned the truck but I was quite impressed.

Well done on not feeling the irritating need to pad this video with shite, making it twenty minutes long. It's the perfect length for a curious passer-by.

I learned about this working in R&D at Hasbro around '89. Later, a friend and collegue improved on it by putting the baking soda in a squeeze bottle with a tapered nozzle. You can kind of squirt a powder/air mixture out almost like liquid. Makes it easy to apply the powder where you want it to go, which is the part I always found difficult.

Holy Hell that is awesome! I’m 43 and feel lucky to have not waited another decade before seeing this little gem of a quick fix. Bravo

Great detail. You might want to mention that it's not advisable to use it on the body. I split a nail a while ago and tried to glue the split together with a few applications of the glue only, but it wouldn't last longer than a few minutes. So without thinking I covered the whole nail with the super glue and then applied a thick covering of baking soda. Bad idea.😱 The chemical reaction of course gives off a ton of heat. I think the neighbors heard me screaming. The heat only lasted a few minutes and I was able to file the baking soda down nice and smooth. Thanks for sharing. Cheers

Yep. You are so busted. I don’t know how many times I work on something and don’t put a towel under it protecting my wife’s nice table. You are a true rebel. “Why don’t you do it in the garage!” She says. Because the lighting at the dinner table is so much better !😂

You just taught an old dog a new trick. Thank you, Bob!

I bought some type of glue similar to superglue at the state fair. It came with a little bottle of white powder to use in this way! It cost a lot more than baking soda. I’m betting it was pretty much the same thing. Thanks for the tip!

When I worked in the ITS dept. at a local hospital we ordered a squeeze bottle with a tapered nozzle full of a product similar to this. It worked great for repair on all kinds of computer related items. Great stuff, the baking soda will be much cheaper. Thank you!

Love that.... "good as new" especially since "new" wasn't good to begin with. Hey, it might even be better.
