Most home were built under the 1992 code. Once they go then they have to go to code. The houses need to be up on stilts and concrete blocks and roof codes are all new now as well. Unfortunately all of us in Florida have to pay high insurance rates now because of these storms and this who live on the water. They should have to pay those rates themselves and not depend on the government or state to save there butts.

Cedar Key should be on a list of uninhabitable, UNinsurable coastal areas.
Welcome to the Anthropocene epoch.

We see this kind of hurricane devastation every year and I don’t understand why people keep moving in those area areas. I would love to live in a coastal area, but I would have to move back away from the coast the long ways. Yes there could still be hurricane damage, but probably not flooding like you get close to the coast. However, I really feel bad for those people and what they’re going through because they have nothing now. I just pray that their insurance companies will come through for them.

One thing that Florida does right is dealing with the aftermath of hurricanes. I’m heading down next week. I have friends in St Petersburg that need help. I live in Sarasota and our neighborhood did not flood. Many of our friends were not so lucky😢

In February 2018 our astronomy convention was held in Chiefland, moved up from the Florida Keys due to Hurricane Irma. We went to cedar Key several nights, a very nice place. Painful to hear and see the destruction. Every winter I get down from Canada, may visit the town. Pray everyone can recover.

The storm surge wasn't 8 feet, it just came up 8 feet on that house
You measure it from normal sea level, not a house.
It was around 15 feet or more

The south east is a wreck. Debris from old buildings are scattered as far as one can see. The buildings that remain are crumbling. Most of the water isn’t safe to drink. People are without employment. Many of the people are breathing in dangerous chemicals. These people don’t even have basic hygiene and dental care. Now on top of all of that they have hurricane damage to deal with. It’s just devastating.

Cedar Key is only ten feet above sea level; it’s not a good place to live because of the low elevation.

Not just living near the water. They're literally living in the water.
