On Tuesday, April 14, 2015, SpaceX Falcon 9’s first stage attempted a precision landing on our autonomous spaceport drone ship named “Just Read the Instructions”. The stage made it to the drone ship and landed, but excess lateral velocity caused it to tip over. Next landing and recovery attempt will occur during the CRS-7 mission, scheduled for June 2015.

close!

Kudos anyway, that is a very ambitious project and I really hope they get it right next time.  Btw, just imagine the mind boggling computer program the ship has to run to attempt that landing!

SpaceX is easily one of the coolest companies around.

Apparently it was one of the landing legs that buckled... you could see that one reaction control thruster firing valiantly to keep it upright, and then stopping...

Still love how it’s trying to save itself till the last moment, that thruster at the top is like “I’m firing as hard as I can, … oh no”

For simplicity, and to save weight; the hydraulic system has no return lines for the fluid. In one attempt the booster ran out of hydraulic fluid before landing.
In the very first attempt; the booster developed a spin along its longitudinal axis, causing the fuel to be centrifugally moved to the walls of the tank. The engine was starved and went out.
