10 Best Character Arcs In My Hero Academia
A good character arc in My Hero Academia or any anime series calls for some essential elements such as personal growth, sympathetic goals and dreams, meaningful and dynamic relationships, a combination of victories and defeats, and even a career change or a change of heart. All things considered, some MHA characters are famous for having the most exciting, compelling arcs that revealed who these characters truly are – and often changed them.
10
Izuku Midoriya
My Hero Academia's shonen lead, Izuku Midoriya, has a thorough and inspirational character arc all throughout My Hero Academia. His arc touches upon almost every theme in this anime, from self-acceptance and the power of friendship to the virtues of hard work and much more.
Izuku was a total underdog at first, a Quirkless boy who desperately dreamed to be like his idol, All Might. Now Izuku has the power of One For All and must face Tomura Shigaraki someday, which has forced him to grow up quickly and become the kind of person who can bear these burdens without ever losing his smile.
9
Katsuki Bakugo
Izuku's childhood friend turned bully, Katsuki Bakugo, was intensely dislikable at first. He was notorious for being self-centered, uncooperative, petty, and aggressive, but he also genuinely wished to live up to All Might's example and be a great hero, despite his weak charisma.
Bakugo was more than a thuggish antihero, though – he also nursed serious and surprisingly sympathetic insecurities that explained many of his worst traits. Bakugo eventually cleaned up his act, and completed his arc when he honestly apologized to Izuku.
8
Ochaco Uraraka
Izuku's first real friend at UA, the charming Ochaco Uraraka, made a great first impression as a kind girl whose arc was like a scaled-down version of Izuku's own. Ochaco wasn't born Quirkless, but she was still a total underdog who wished to become a hero so she could support her struggling parents.
Ochaco's road to greatness was rough, including her brutal loss to Bakugo in the sports festival, but Ochaco hung on. She showed impressive mental and physical grit, and always found a way to get stronger and move on, all while staying true to her friendly, cheerful self.
7
Shoto Todoroki
Izuku's kuudere classmate Shoto Todoroki made a rough first impression as a cold, aloof boy who took himself a bit too seriously. Then My Hero Academia fans learned the truth – Shoto was raised to be a tool, and he is desperate to carve out his own identity.
Shoto slowly warmed up to his classmates, learned to face his inner demons, and even began mending ties with his father, which wasn't easy. Shoto also learned to stop coasting on his talent and began to really push himself, all while learning to be a better team player as well.
6
All Might
Even if All Might was the invincible Symbol of Peace who had it all, he was not a flat or static character in My Hero Academia's story. Through flashbacks and his gradual decline in power, All Might's flaws and vulnerabilities were shown, and he ended up being remarkably similar to Izuku.
Under that dazzling facade, All Might was just a skinny, insecure kid just like Deku, and he eventually realized that he would never deal the final blow to the villains. Instead, he humbly stepped down and prepared Izuku to take over, all while grappling with his uncomfortable retirement as an empty has-been.
5
Momo Yaoyorozu
Like her classmate Shoto, the genius Momo Yaoyorozu quickly learned that immense natural talent wasn't enough, and she was in for a rude awakening at UA. Momo was deeply rattled when
4
Twice
Several villains in My Hero Academia had compelling personal arcs, most of all the wisecracking but miserable villain known as Twice. At first, he felt like a Deadpool knockoff with his costume design and jokes, but he was actually desperate for friends who would accept him no matter what.
Twice nearly lost sight of who he was because of his duplication Quirk, and society always rejected him. Then the League of Villains accepted him, and Twice was ready to fight and die for those people in return. This arc reached its climax when Twice gave his life fighting Hawks to defend his many villain friends from harm.
