President Xi Jinping denounced the US-led Western attempt to "contain, encircle, and suppress China". Foreign Minister Qin Gang condemned Washington's "hysterical neo-McCarthyism" and "malicious confrontation", opposing the "cold war mentality".

I believe the “button wrong” analogy was speaking to the fact that after The US overreaction to the balloon, there was no way to move forward without addressing that reaction and in not doing so, The US is just moving into a more aggressive, volatile posture because they refuse to go back and address their behavior over the weather balloon.
