CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Dining with Rosemary (Mia Farrow) and Guy (John Cassavetes), Hutch (Maurice Evans) relates the vile history of their new apartment.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
In Roman Polanski's first American film, adapted from Ira Levin's horror bestseller, a young wife comes to believe that her offspring is not of this world. Waifish Rosemary Woodhouse (Mia Farrow) and her struggling actor husband, Guy (John Cassavetes), move into the Bramford, an old New York City apartment building with an ominous reputation and only elderly residents. Neighbors Roman and Minnie Castevet (Sidney Blackmer and Ruth Gordon) soon come nosing around to welcome the Woodhouses to the building; despite Rosemary's reservations about their eccentricity and the weird noises that she keeps hearing, Guy starts spending time with the Castevets. Shortly after Guy lands a plum Broadway role, Minnie starts showing up with homemade chocolate mousse for Rosemary. When Rosemary becomes pregnant after a mousse-provoked nightmare of being raped by a beast, the Castevets take a special interest in her welfare. As the sickened Rosemary becomes increasingly isolated, she begins to suspect that the Castevets' circle is not what it seems. The diabolical truth is revealed only after Rosemary gives birth, and the baby is taken away from her. Polanski's camerawork and Richard Sylbert's production design transform the realistic setting (shot on-location in Manhattan's Dakota apartment building) into a sinister projection of Rosemary's fears, chillingly locating supernatural horror in the familiar by leaving the most grotesque frights to the viewer's imagination. This apocalyptic yet darkly comic paranoia about the hallowed institution of childbirth touched a nerve with late-'60s audiences feeling uneasy about traditional norms. Produced by B-horror maestro William Castle, Rosemary's Baby became a critically praised hit, winning Gordon an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Inspiring a wave of satanic horror from The Exorcist (1973) to The Omen (1976), Rosemary's Baby helped usher in the genre's modern era by combining a supernatural story with Alfred Hitchcock's propensity for finding normality horrific.

I love Hutch. He is my favorite character in "Rosemary's Baby." Every adult woman needs a friend like Hutch in her life.

Hutch was the MVP. He was smart enough to see right through Roman and Minnie and tried to warn Rosemary.

"He made quite a splash in the 90s"
Me thinking "Well, that's quite recent"
takes me quite some time to realize he mean 1890s

Hutch is the kind of guy I want to grow up to be. Friendly and likable; a fine raconteur; somebody who knows something about a lot of subjects and talks about them in a way that makes them interesting. :)

I really liked Hutch. Down-to-earth with a very deep wisdom and sense of protection for the people he cared about. His early subtle warnings at the beginning and throughout the film, regarding both “the Bram” and about Minnie and Roman, established this. He represented the Church in this dichotomy, advising but not forcing.

Haha, he said the 90's. Of course he meant the 1890's

Love the detail of this room in Hutch's apartment, the cabinet and shelves lined with books, the lighting, the coziness of where they're having their meal. Loved the character of Hutch in the book as well as the movie, which was the most faithful screenplay adaptation I've ever seen. Masterful movie that holds up very well today.

Guy was an ambitious conspirator, and Rosemary was too sweet and naive. Such a bad combination. Rosemary, honey, you should have listened to Hutch! Friendship is so much more meaningful than love and marriage!

Adorable Hutch I loved the book as he’s so much more of rosemary’s life ie she lived in shared house & he helped her & the other girls, he advices Rosemary to study philosophy! Typical Guy doesn’t like Hutch ( Guy is the opposite to everything Hutch is ) Hutch is intelligent compassionate & genuinely cares for Rosemary’s future

Mia Farrow was always quite thin, but this is manifested in her role as Rosemary. She eats so sparsely, barely putting anything on her plate. There are a couple of other eating scenes in the movie where the other actors are diving in, but she mostly toys with her food.

Even in this early scene, I get the sense there's no love lost between Guy and Hutch.

0:40 “Oh, lovely.”
1:24 “Mmm! You really rouse my appetite.” I love his sarcasm. Such gross topics while eating dinner. 😂

I never noticed until now that Rosemary holds her fork in the English way. I believe Mia Farrow's mother was from England so that explains Rosemary holding her fork that way; I suppose it was the normal thing to do for Mia and it showed up in the movie. Too I wonder if there's a connection between Hutch serving lamb and Rosemary being something of a sacrificial lamb.

Adore Hutch, he’s a incredible character in the book & guy is jealous of there friendship, Guy is very into making rosemary loyal to guy only, in the book he makes sure she doesn’t see her friends as often & puts hutch down

I talk like Hutch in real life. By that I mean, I'm always telling historic anecdotes the way he does.
