American/Euro Truck Simulator VR Setup and Optimization Guide - HTC Vive and Oculus Rift

VR setup guide for American Truck Simulator and Euro Truck Simulator 2 with HTC Vive or Oculus Rift.

This video is a guide on how to enable VR for American Truck Simulator and/or Euro Truck Simulator 2, how to optimize the in-game graphic options for VR, how to tweak the config files to maximize your VR graphics and performance, how to set up a custom keybinding for "Reset HMD Orientation".

**EDIT: You don't need SteamVR beta for Async reprojection anymore**

This guide works for both the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive VR headsets. The main difference between the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive for ATS and ETS2 VR setup is that you have to enter "-openvr" as a Steam launch option for the HTC Vive and "-oculus" as a Steam launch option for the Oculus Rift.

Setting up VR for American Truck Sim and Euro Truck Sim involves activating the VR beta from the "Beta" tab of American Truck Simulator or Euro Truck Simulator 2 properties in Steam. Then add "-openvr" or "-oculus" to the launch options in the "General" tab. This is all you need to do to activate VR for Euro Truck Simulator 2 or American Truck Simulator, but I also cover a lot of optimizations and tweaks for a better VR experience in this video.

The config and keybinding files can be found at these paths by default on a Windows 10 PC:
C:\Users\name\Documents\Euro Truck Simulator 2
C:\Users\name\Documents\American Truck Simulator

Super-useful, thank you! :) For Rift owners - in the config file there is an oculus_mirror setting which you can change to '1' to show your HMD view on the monitor so your kids can watch your awesome driving.

after a whole month of messing with config file and nvidia inspector they help a lil but using my dk2 i was still getting this funny lag n i have a gtx1060 n 16gb ram no matter how many things i did even on ultra low still lag, when i think the lag gone it come bk its like a fast then slow down when driving i could not stand it but this video right here save my life after following along, 4 days of smooth game play with my dk2 works both for ets2/ats...i fucking love you

This is so great! I'm really glad I found this video. I was just looking at buying a TrackIR for use with Euro and American Truck Simulators, because I had no idea they were usable in the Rift, which I have had for years, since the CV1 was released. I do have some unanswered questions please if you or anyone can please help.

I have been tasked with building and setting up a VR sim rig at our driving training academy, which we have been using just with screen for a few weeks now. (Best job ever!)

The aim being to save fuel costs.

I am sure this will help me immensely as I am at the optimisation stage now.


Figured out a bit of this today with help of other content creator's but the flicker issues I was having were doing my head in and could only last short periods testing in vr today.

It makes sense why now. (AA etc)

I also noticed that the steering wheel angles don't match up and in addition the wheel doesn't keep up with my rapid lengthy rotations they can end up mismatching by so much that I crash often.

for anyone with an Oculus Quest 2, use "-openvr" not "-oculus." if you use "-oculus" the game uses the controllers to move the camera instead of the headset.

Hmm does not work it just shows on my screen? F11 does nothing.

Edit: NM don't start the game with SteamVR already on it messes up. Make sure SteamVR is off and start the game it will automatically start the VR up inside the headset.

I would recommend leaving manual stereo buffer scale at 1.0 since the rescaling is done with bilinear filtering which is crap.
Increase supersampling through steamVR instead it has way better filtering algorithms.
