Before we dive into when you should get one, let me explain what a Pap smear is. A Pap smear, also called a Pap test, is a procedure to test for cervical cancer in women.

During a Pap smear your doctor will collect cells from your cervix — the lower, narrow end of your uterus that's at the top of your vagina. The cells are then tested for cancerous cells.

Early detection of cancer with a Pap smear can give you a greater chance of of survival. A Pap can also help detect changes in your cells that can point to cancer in the future. Detecting these abnormal cells early with a Pap smear is your first step in halting the possible development of cervical cancer.

Now that we know what a Pap is, knowing how often you should get one is next. Typically, doctors recommend a Pap testing every three years for women ages 21 to 65. Women age 30 and older can consider Pap testing every five years.

If you have ever had an abnormal Pap it is best to speak with your doctor to make the right decision for your current medical situation.
