A compass does NOT show true North. They show magnetic North at your current location.
Most compasses do have a declination angle which allows a user to know True North, but you have to know which angle to set beforehand.
And a compass (of course) responds to any (and all!) localised magnetic fields, which occur in nature - as well as man-made magnetic fields.
That is why, when you use a compass, you have to use it often, to make sure you are heading the right direction, as you move across the ground.
