The original version of this reached number 1 in the US charts in 1975 and 2 in the UK in 1976. It tells the story of rebellious truck drivers teaming up drive across America in a convoy from Flagstaff, Arizona (Flag Town) to New Jersey, via Tulsa and Chicago. The narration includes the imagined drivers communicating via CB radio, using CB slang, and whilst ostensibly a novelty record, it is also rightly regarded as a great song (indeed it has appeared in lists of the top 100 country songs of all time).
Inspired by the song, the movie Convoy was released and the song was re-recorded with words to fit the storyline.
CW McCall was actually a character created by musician William Dale Fries Jr, who died in 2022 aged 93.
