The button lock sticks out too much imo. Looks like it can be engaged with a hard full grip

Rick I just completed my smock build yesterday. It’s my favorite knife in my collection. I upgraded the bearings to skiff. It fits well in the pocket, super smooth, and my personal favorite blade shape. I upgraded the scales to oil slick zirconium, zirc backspacer, zirc button, and a zircuti clip

Hello there,
There is a problem with the reviews like yours: (I'll start a little from further away):
- In the world there are no absolutes. And in the absence of absolutes, as an old adage goes, EVERYTHING IS KNOWN IN COMPARISON!
A knife is a knife is a knife, but how good or shitty it is is best understood when compared to another similar knife. I recently got me a Spyderco Swayback, which is a Marcin Slysz design, currently sold for $200 which is about the same as the Smock, and Swayback is so much superior to Smock in EVERY WAY that it's not even a joke: - Finer more sophisticated blade done in finer steel, better overall design, better handle materials and ergonomics, better overall construction and quality of assembly.
So, is Smock a good knife? When compared to Swayback, not at all!! When compared to a more iconic PM2, also not at all! When compared to Manix 2., ditto!
I mean Smock is an OK knife, but for Spyderco, it is one of their least impressive efforts. For example, that fake carbon fiber veneer glued onto a much cheaper G10 over the so-1980's full-steel liners should tell folks all there is to know. This knife strives to appear fancier than it actually is - a poseur, an imposter, a pretender.
There is an interview with Kevin Smock on YouTube where he explains this knife's design, mentioning the reason behind such an antiquated construction method: - he says so that the others can then easily mod it, which to me sounds like a lousy lame excuse, as if he left his design intentionally unresolved...
Contrasting it with the Swayback which feels fully resolved, yet if anyone is willing to mod it, if there is a will, there is a way! It's just that you do not leave design incomplete or use shitty materials so that others HAVE to mod it immediately after purchasing it to improve the crap that it was when it left the factory. What about those who do not wish to mod it, or at least not to mod it right away?? I can smell BS in Smock's argument, and if you believe everything he says, I have a Brooklyn Bridge to sell you!
The truth of the matter is - after several years of this knife languishing on the shelves, there is currently (within the past half year) a marketing push to get it finally moving and make way for a more deserving Spyderco fare coming in the pipeline. Which explains why so many vids are being made about it, with Spyderco themselves providing plenty of review knives to all willing youtubers, even those with smaller followings...
I just realized I might be doing a service here to general knife community by saying things you may not say due to some reviewer obligation: - Yes, this knife is not as great as some reviewers spin it!
I personally vote with my money, and while I love Spyderco knives and own plenty of them, I will not be buying this knife, not now, not ever.
Cheers!
