Propaganda and dehumanizing the enemy is as old and essential a tool of warfare as a club or stone but it's also the most misunderstood. This isn't a weapon it's armor, armor for your soul, how else are you supposed to remember to shoot the enemy and not yourself while trapped in those conditions

One of the great aces of the Pacific War was Richard Bong. He was in a brisk struggle with another Army pilot (and of course the Navy) for most kills. Eventually he was told to go back to the States to recieve the Medal of Honor for 40 kills, and he was seething. Then a Japanese air raid occurred, and a Japanese fighter was shot down. The pilot bailed out but his chute failed. He impacted a couple of hundred yards from where Bong was sheltering in a trench. Bong went over to see the body. Until now he had always thought of his opponents as airplanes, and the realization that each kill of a plane was likely a kill of a person affected him deeply, and he went home without complaint.

Not to mention the atrocities they comitted. My Father in law fought on Iwo Jima & was a MP during occupation in both Jirosjma & Nagasaki. He hated the Japanese to the day he died.

Reminds me of a video of a friendly fire incident from Desert Storm. A helicopter targeted and blew up an American tank instead of an Iraqi one. The distraught pilot kept saying "there were people in there."

I remember when I went to NCO Leadership School for 9 weeks. Our orientation lecture started with why did you join the military. Patriotism, love of country ect... CMSGT said that is not the reason. You joined to kill . The auditorium went quite. I am in the Air Force and a crew chief. Some were Admistration, cooks, police, ect.. It was a wake up call to all of us.
