Semi VS Train (Way too close)

This is a dash cam video of me coming to a set of tracks at Lac La Biche Alberta Canada. Note the rail way lights are not working and train suddendly appeared from behind the tree line. I was driving a semi pulling a set of Super-Bs I was empty at the time non dangerous goods. I post this video in hopes of raising awareness when coming to a set of tracks. Please be extra vigilant when it come to trains and their crossings. We take for granted that the light will warn us of approaching trains. In this case not so true.
I was traveling about 20 km/h under the speed limit at the time. I did not hear a train horn.
CN took responsibility right away. especially when they seen I had a dash cam. I was not at fault and I received no fines.
if not for my dash cam I would have been screwed.
Date of accident May 23/18
Bought the dashcam couple weeks prior to incedent not realizing I had sound off while recording.
Song was edited in after incident.
My Roo bar was damaged and in need of replacing. as far as I know there was no damage to the train. The rail lights took one for the team.

Please keep in mind dash cams see ALOT more than a driver in a few ways such as it has a wide recording view, it on the window so can see thing earlier then the driver, object like mirrors can interfere with the view.

For those that say I should have been paying attention and I could have stopped on time, perhaps so. But face it, the people that say that probably would have added up hitting the train cause they also weren't paying close attention. in this video your looking for the train. if you were in my position the results likey would have been the same or worse. Most people rely on technology, in this case the rail lights. I learnt a valuable lesson and I have a whole new perspective of rail crossings. I've been drilling it into everyone'shead that I talk to about rail crossings. NEVER EVER rely on those lights and take a few extra seconds to make sure it's clear.

Only dangerous goods are required to slow right down or stop at crossings. I haul goods that are non-dangerous goods so we're not required to stop.
Also rules may vary depending on where you live.

That train signal was only three days away from retirement 😢

Thank goodness for your dash cam that proved the signal was malfunctioning. After you crushed it, they'd have claimed it was working before you broke it.

I just saw a crossing with gates and lights not operate at all a few days ago with a train coming. I have filmed at least a dozen malfunctioning crossing gates and lights. Its really not that rare. i made a compilation video of a bunch of them.

good thing you got a dashcam cuz if you didn't they'd probably blame it on you without evidence lol

At least the semi tried to turn out of the train's path.

Granted it didn't look like it was travelling very fast, and I can't determine how many cars it was pulling, that train stopped pretty quickly.

Always expect a train. Back in the fall of 1996, I was watching a train going past my apartment in Bowling Green, Ohio. Across the street was a crossing with lights and gates. This was about 10PM, well after dark. It was a long freight train, and about mid-train, the gates went up and the lights turned off. The train cleared the crossing, and the signals came back on with the gates going down for a minute before turning off again.

I drive trains for a living. Nasty incident you had here, but seriously well done on your response. Hope you and the train crew are all good.

Dashcams are the best kind of insurance to have!

That’s a good reaction on your part. Lights weren’t working, CN was at fault. Thank you for respecting the railroad and doing the right thing

Plot twist, he'd been asking them to replace the broken signal for weeks. It's the train who almost got in the truck's way of finally getting rid of the busted signal.

The worst part is the lights weren't flashing, best part is you were paying attention.

Edit. Thanks for 117 Like? How did my comment get that high?

Seems like good reason to stop or slow when approaching railroad tracks.

The train didn't get the truck, but it sure got the crossing signal.

My wake-up alarm song is East Bound and Down. Glad CN owned up to it.

I’m amazed they took responsibility for the accident.. usually they try jumping throw loopholes trying to find a way to not take responsibility

Quick thinking. Also, fucking light was broken anyway. 2 birds, I stone. Great save driver.
