Even ancient native american civilisations have flood stories closely resembling the one in Genesis. How do you suppose that could be the case unless it actually happened as written? Of course each one has minor variations as they were transmitted orally but the content is the same. (And all the different variations seem to spring from one common source, which is the story in Genesis, recorded exactly as it happened)

It should also be pointed out that the reasoning for the flood differ drastically in each account. From divine capriciousness (Eridu Genesis) to depriving Enlil of his sleep (Atrahasis Epic) to overpopulation (Gilgamesh Epic) to, finally sin and the wickedness of man (Genesis), each contain a fundamentally different kind of god or gods; only Genesis depicts God as wholly perfect and not reliant on human sacrifices. The minute people start claiming Genesis actually “borrows” from any of this, it’s an early indication that they are simply repeating the same old recycled arguments without any fair or critical analysis.

The way I see it is, after the flood and generations had come and gone, what actually happened got changed over time like the telephone game and suddenly different people are telling the same story but a changed version of it over the years. You can see the similarities between them like they came from the same place but as people split apart because of the Tower of Babel they started telling the story to their people and it got changed among cultures. Eventually we got what really happened through the Bible because God told it to Moses. We can trust God has it right.

The real mystery in the flood story is in how they cleaned up all those animal droppings.

That's the thing, if an event actually happened, it'd likely be passed down to everyone in the region, different tellings would of course emerge, overtime thru different cultural lenses.

Thus one could assume they are all based on the same event. You may ask which is correct, I think history and philosophy soundly answered that one.
