China's economic decline and social instability have increased the Chinese Communist Party's insecurity, leading to more stringent measures to maintain control. Surveillance on citizens is now ubiquitous, resulting in the creation of a special organization known as "community workers." These workers are essentially low-level spies employed by the state. They constantly patrol neighborhoods, monitoring residents and their interactions with outsiders. Public opinion refers to them as the "Party's guardian army."

It's crazy that people are only now realizing this - it has ALWAYS been the law. Even for a one-night stay at a friends house, they MUST report you to the police! (PSB). Same thing with people who say using a VPN is fine in China, it is illegal and people DO get punished for it.

I visited China for a little over a month in 2007. I had a wonderful time and wanted to go back. But after hearing what I have about the way the CCP is running things I don’t think so.
