The original Mickey Mouse from Walt Disney Animation Studios' Steamboat Willie is coming back! In an upcoming short for Paul Rudish's The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse, the modern Mickey meets his counterpart from the 1920s. Why is Steamboat Willie coming back, though? Is this Disney's response to their character entering the public domain in 2024?

Disney trying to use him as much as possible before they lose him to the public domain

Even if it is just to extend the copyright, it still looks like a fun short, and a great way to celebrate 100 years of Disney.

Theory: They redesigned the Steamboat Willie version of Mickey before the copyright expired so, in case anyone accidentally uses that design mistaking it for the original, they still can sue them.

A little unrelated, but I would be really happy if Disney started using Oswald the Lucky Rabbit more often, or even make him and Ortensia a part of Mickey's main group of friends

This is a perfect celebration and looks super cute, but the line in the trailer “It’s Mickeys World, we’re just living in it” is kinda terrifying when you think about how much entertainment Disney owns…

But Steamboat Willie's always at the beginning of every animated Disney movie. It's not like we haven't seen him in years, if he's literally at the beginning of every Disney movie. But it's cool that he appeared in an episode of the Mickey Mouse show!

Remember. Disney can still use Mickey but public domain just makes sure Disney doesn’t hoard Mickey to themselves and well greed.

Can’t believe that a character that is nearly 100 years old is just now coming into the public domain, and it isn’t even the full character, just the first ever iteration of it. Copyright sucks.

Man, I can't wait for this to come out; it's looking to be just as charming as the entire rest of the Paul Rudish Mickey Mouse shorts!

Although, there's one pivotal detail about it that wasn't mentioned in the video; from what I've heard, this is set to be the final short in the series, and that's a shame, because Rudish Mickey is one of my absolute favorite takes on the character, and I'm seriously hoping they continue to use this incarnation of Mickey Mouse in other projects down the road.
