I didn't realize how much of a menace this Mickey was with the animals

Until now, I never took the time to see this vintage classic.

I can imagine people in theatres in 1928 watching this and laughing their asses off.

Disney: had this for 95 years, never made a remaster
Fans: had it for 2 days, released a remaster for everyone to enjoy

This was called a "talkie" back in 1928. This was revolutionary because there were sound effects and voice acting committed to a film reel that was capable of picture AND sound not only being recorded, but played back in theaters through electronic loudspeakers! Not only seeing, but _hearing_ animation was absolutely revolutionary in the 1920s.

This cartoon is one of the first with synchronized sound and one of the first cartoons to produce a post-produced soundtrack

I remember when I first heard of Steamboat Willie. It was in third grade, and I was under the impression that it’s be a longer movie, like 80 to 90 minutes, because the book I read called it a film, but I didn’t know films could be as short as 7 minutes at the time.

Fun fact: due to a colored Mickey Mouse poster from 1928
You can actually use a semi-modern Mickey Mouse design

Only difference is you have to use the same eyes used in the plane crazy short and his gloves are yellow and shoes are brown

Fun fact: "Turkey in the Straw" (the song featured heavily in Steamboat Willie) was only able to be used by Disney because it was public domain at the time.

You need to watch this from the perspective that nobody had ever really attempted synchronized sound before. Sure, there were a few attempts to stick background music in films, and add some rudimentary comedic sound effects to cartoons - but to have witnessed a cartoon playing the drums, making piglets squeal, cats screech, goats sing, mice whistle, pipes toot and parrots laugh all with perfect audiovisual synchronisation, this must have been absolutely mindblowing for an audience in 1928. Walt Disney really watched everyone else failing to recognise the potential of sound-effects and said "hold my beer."

So clean! So clear! So crisp, smooth, and fluid!
Sure, it takes the full old timey feel out of it, but it gives you the chance to appreciate animation by taking in every easy-to-see frame without distortion.

My Dad said I would beg him to put this tape in the VCR every day after he got me at day care 🙂
Thanks for the memories Walt...❤

Remasters like this are why more old pieces of media needs to be in the public domain.

R.I.P to everyone who first saw this and made this cartoon when it came out. Crazy to think it's copyright free now.

While this isn't going down as one of my all time favorites... it's held up astonishingly well.
Time has been far kinder to 1928 Mickey than it has to the likes of 1902 Monopoly, 1938 Superman, 1963 Dr. Who, 1978 Garfield, 1981 Mario and 1998 Furby.

Unironically glad I held out to watch the glossy 4K remaster to this for the first time.

Bruh, my mother had shown me this when I was 7 years old, today I'm 19 and I'm proud to have seen this, I'm so happy. ☺️

Can’t wait for other Mickey shorts to go public domain. Seeing them all restored in HD will be a real treat.
