This is the most difficult sport to learn, I think. It took me about four years before I got a sense for where to be to catch a wave. Just on the shoulder. I’d angle my board just a touch then arch my back and hold for a beat as I caught the wave. It makes a huge difference to angle the board slightly in the direction you want to go. Then quickly pull your legs under yourself and stand in a slight crouch to get going. It’s like having just the right touch as you shoot a free throw or putt a golf ball. You get a feel for it over time. But once you stand up on the fastest part of the shoulder as you ride, it feels almost spiritual. You’re one with nature.

So i tried this on my session today and it workd! When I remembere to look, trust my pop up and "lean" on the cobra pose, no rush or better, to the rithm of the wave. Sometimes i see of the wave is steep enough i can get away with angling by paddling at catching. When is less steep and less powerful i usually have more time and so the lean on the cobra pose gives that sense of "control" and a "pause", to look and remain calm looking at where i want to go and do. Thanks! Keep them coming!

Thank you for this great video 🙏🏻 our beaches are currently closed due to chemical contamination from a factory fire but as soon as I can get back in the surf I will be putting this to practice!!!!

Thanks a lot! But at 2:13, when the surfer is paddling at 5 km/h at 45º, it is equivalent of paddling about 3, 53km/h in the wave's direction, and not 2, 5 km/h (do sin 45º equals adjacent side divided by hypotenuse to get the perpendicular component of the vector). Besides, I apreciate very much all your videos. Aloha
