Luffy isn’t supposed to develop as a character in the sense that he changes personalities like Zoro. Like Goku and All Might, Luffy’s character arc is supposed to be flat. Luffy changes yes, but not noticeably, he “grows” into a more mature leader and person instead of “developing” into a better character.

These flat characters are *built* like this so they can remain interesting for the 100s - 1 000s of chapters and episodes. How are they interesting? Because we aren’t just watching the Luffy or Goku shows. We’re watching Luffy and Goku spread their unlimited positive energy and changing people around them for the better as they work towards their own goals

luffy has the least linear development. it’s slightly harder to see since his morals haven’t really changed but the way he goes about things has changed

I really love one piece fans watching one piece and not understanding that after the time skip luffy no longer relied souly on his devil fruit.

It was stated that people who use devil fruits tend to rely to much on their fruits powers to win fights even if they have haki. We see this on Wano with Kid and Law vs Big mom where all 3 relied more than anything on the powers their fruits offered.

But all the way back on fishman island we see luffy using his haki almost as much as his devil fruit using them in equal parts and on both whole cake against Katakuri and Wano in the prison we see him train more on how to hone his haki. On dressrosa he revealed gear 4 which is a perfect mix of his powers and haki and his fight with kaido was almost entirely him using his haki boosted by his devil fruit up until he goes Gear 5 which was literally evening out his ability with fruit to his abilities with his haki cause at that point he was more skilled in haki than his fruit.

Same with Kaido. Kaido literally stated that Haki is whats needed to win fights not devil fruit abilities. And he literally used his haki more in their fight than he used his devil fruit. He could have been constantly breath blasting Luffy that whole fight but he understood that wouldn't win that fight.

I personally think that aot is accurately rated by the ani-manga community but I do at least partially agree with everyone that says the ending is mid/bad
