In this video I discuss what the Swift Language is and a brief history. This video is a free preview from my iOS Dev Launchpad course designed to help absolute beginners get started.

Course Link:

iOS Dev Launchpad is my new course for beginners in Swift and iOS development. Of course we will cover the basics of the Swift Language, Xcode and building beginner apps. But in this course we cover so much more about the overall world of iOS development. Things like career paths, networking, libraries, version control, how apps work and so much more.

I also do my best to guide you on future learning by reviewing and recommending iOS development blogs, websites, podcasts and books.

If you are just starting out you will find immense value in this.

Thank you for the history lesson. The reason why the language started is important

If anyone is interested in Swift's history before its release, look up interviews with Chris Lattner. Apple had, and perhaps has to this day, an engineering culture fond of Objective-C, so it did not sound easy for him to convince others to do an entirely new language instead of just improving Objective-C.

I can remember when Swift was first announced. I was so pissed because at the time, I had just taught myself how to program, and I used C/Objective-C to do that. I thought that all that time I spent was wasted for nothing because when Apple announces something new, it usually means that they’re going to mark what it’s replacing as obsolete. Luckily, that turned out to not be the case here as Cocoa is still written in Objective-C, and it actually turned out to be a blessing as opposed to a curse because you still need to be at least somewhat familiar with Objective-C when working with Cocoa even if you’re writing an app in Swift. Yay me! I actually did something right!

Great video Sean! I know tons of people that want to use Swift, but own a Window's machine, so that'd be a great feature!

I want to learn a new language which is coding language. I am a doc and I have never tried coding before. The main reason is I want to create things based out of my own ideas, and I suppose coding would help me with that. Do you think Swift is a good start? I am wavering between Python and Swift. But Swift has apps like Playgounds for beginners like me.

now that it's open source, and can be used on linux, windows, and google is making a hard push for Swift with TensorFlow and pushing Swift towards ML if it continues to grow it could become a competitor to python in time.. and Apple I believe is about to announce a major upgrade Swift in the Macworld Developer Conference in June,

You're great but I feel a bit put off Swift by all those rewrites. Isn't there a case for just using Objective C and never having to worry about rewrites?
