Though I'm not really a fan of Cameron, I'm glad to see that he is willing to let people get on with the job, rather than the usual "government knows best" BS...

If a country has a direction and a purpose, people will follow to embrace the common destiny. If Britain was preparing to colonise Mars, we'd likely see a swift uptake in kids taking science and technology courses and a return to excellence due to people wanting to achieve the impossible. You set the highest value for your society to achieve as premier football and celebrity and your nations education system will die...Nations are like people, they die without challenges.

Discipline is needed in the class room.

Kids need to be told that if they keep fucking around at school, they'll begin to fail. Finding work would be more difficult and they shouldn't depend on Jobseekers allowance to pay for their failings.

@CharmingLordSausage ... which returns a much dimmer light at the end of the tunnel than is promised. education in the wider sense is a wholesomely authentic goal/ambition to offer, education as our school system is less so. apologies if my response is far longer than you intended to invite.

I never let School interfere with my education

Let me be clear with you politicians, leaders and policymakers

Education comes from the Latin word educe which means to bring out the gifts but the school doesn't bring out much it just stuffs more facts inside of you.

@ sausage ... I think you've covered most of it, i would suggest the goals you've stated here, which i agree are the ones valued in society, are false challenges, hollow dreams and transparently so. all we need now is ethical decision making, which unfortunately is necessarily at odds with capitalist dogma. i think it essential to free up education, admit that they cannot claim to know what's best for children to learn enough to demand their permanent obedience and have students guide themselves

@CharmingLordSausage nope, i'd hate to give that impression. i think he's segregating the classes, 1984-esque. the part of your comment i wanted to pick upon was the very last part, in that it is necessary for the challenges to be authentic, whereas our society misrepresents those of celebrity and materialism. And further to be accepted freely. cameron's bid of intolerence to failure in education is poisonous as it demands we *all* take structured authoritarian curriculum academia seriously ...

not to mention that a number of them need to learn how to tie their shoe laces and how to dress for work

"...bogged down in a great debate about how we get there." ".it is clear what works." and he goes on to not say anything about cost/access, and quality. Empty talk from a muppet.
