With iMachining 3D, you can also mill prismatic parts, which include hundreds of pockets and islands. This can be done in one operation, without the need for defining geometry chains, directly from the solid model of the part and the solid model of the stock. iMachining 3D will do the rest automatically and optimally, avoiding collisions between the holder and the updated stock at every stage. This can also be limited to specific working areas without chaining.

That is exactly what is done in iMachining 3D. It keeps constant track of the stock material and always recognizes open pockets and material machined in previous operations.
One more note. In SolidCAM 2014 we will also have the stock recognition without chaining in iMachining 2D.

It should also be noted that chaining is also used for people who like to have control of every aspect of their tool path and for customized pocketing using sketches.

As to the recording. Doing pockets via chaining while not being the only option that we have for pockets is still being used by many of our customers. As we strive ahead with new option we do not forget our customers who have already used chaining for pockets and keep on improving what we have.
