I like both versions and they are both very important, but it's almost impossible to compare, because Joe Cocker did his take on it later on, and he essentially used this version by The Beatles who actually wrote it and made it famous originally, seeing as it was a huge hit. But he was able to kind of use them as the straight man to do a lot of stuff against it. And it was fantastic. But in its intent, it's a totally different animal than the original song and conception and delivery of it.

John Lennon wanted to put Hitler and Jesus on the album cover but the record company wouldn't let them. It's a list of people who are historically significant (if I remember correctly) and culturally as well.

I encourage you to listen again and key in on Paul's bass playing. It's some of the most melodic on record.

Loved it, Mug. Thought your insights were valid and interesting at the same time.

I didn't bother to zoom in but I know from memory that Marilyn Monroe isn't that group on the album cover. I want to say maybe Mick Jagger is as well? The whole concept in design of it is quite whimsical.

3:20 - I'm on board. Both versions bring different flavors to the table, but Joe Cocker's has something extra-- you really feel it. The Beatles one is great, and feels warm and heartfelt, but Joe's comes with some miles on that heart.

No mention of McCartney's bassline on this one, Mug? It's the standout piece of the song. Gives it its melodic smoothness; beautiful tone and feel. Research James Jamerson, the Motown bassist, to see where Paul got his bass playing style from. As you point out so eloquently, all of these guys are influenced.

Joe Cocker’s version, as good as it is, is so altered from the original in tenor and intent as to have virtually created another song entirely. Understand that the Sgt. Pepper’s album was a concept album (widely credited as the first in rock history), the tracks intended to be listened to in order (notice the first several seconds of it being the end of track one moving seamlessly into this, track two), and the album in the whole for maximum enjoyment. This track, nestled between the opening and third tracks, Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, was intended to have a lighter, less dramatic impact in order to prepare the listener to experience track 3 — a purpose I believe would not have been satisfied by a heavier, soulful arrangement such as Cocker’s. Listening to this version in isolation, as we have here, and comparing it to Cocker’s is in effect doing it a disservice in my view. One man’s opinion….

They had Sonny Liston on the bottom left because they couldn't get Cassius Clay (later Muhammed Ali) to agree to have their photo on the cover. Lots of others. The Edgar Alan Poe photo is rich. John actually mentions Edgar Alan Poe on his song "I Am The Walrus".

For this version, Mug, think smooth as opposed to raw and powerful. This version is just as smooth as silk. That's how they nailed their version of this one.

Don't worry too much about Aleister Crowley, Mae West and Lenny Bruce will see to him. And don't worry about Karl Marx either. Laurel & Hardy got him covered too.

Although Joe's cover is very good, what's most impressive is the songwriting. Most bands would be overjoyed if they managed to write one song like this.

The truth is Joe Cocker did indeed take the vocals to the next level on this song, no doubt. Ringo never felt he was a great vocalist. In fact, there was a lot of coaching from Paul on this song because Ringo was so nervous about his singing. At the end of the song Paul pushes Ringo to sing his high note to end the song. In a recent interview Ringo said he was "fantastically nervous" about hitting that note! So the spirit of the original song when it came out is self explanatory in the title "With A Little Help from My Friends". Really is beautiful in the song that the other Beatles rallied in love around Ringo.
