Vertex waves aren't supposed to be negative (eg. downward in Fz_Cz and upward in Cz_Pz)?

I wanted to ask, are there any studies that try to identify dreaming activity in relation to EEG? And is it not possible and practiced to put more electrodes on the head and also on the face or suspended in air? Can these waves be represented differently not with a linear twodimensional wave? Ans how is it possible to detect the origin of the oscillations in the depth of the brain?
