I love war chants like when Azog commands the other legion of orcs to attack and they start shouting.... Shivers down my spine.... It's so epic and awesome! Starts @ 0:05

Okay I'm a huge Lord of the Rings fan, and yes, I understand the appeal of practical effects. All told, they gave the Lord of the Rings trilogy a lot of its feel. That said, I am also a computer graphics students looking to major in game art design, and I understand just how impressive this CGI actually is. You guys can say it is overused all you want, but for the love of all that is good please please please don't call it a lazy money grab. The amount of time, effort, and intricate detail that goes into that kind of stuff deserves to be lauded and recognized for how impressive it is.

Gandalf: "Legolas, do you see that pale orc on that hill with the banners?"
Legolas: "Yes."
Gandalf: "Shoot him!"
*Azog dies to a flying arrow*
Legolas: "Done."
Bilbo: "Look! The orcs are retreating."

Ok let me get a few facts clear :
-yes all of the non recognisable characters on these scenes are made with CGI.
-For the battle of Helm's Deep, there were around 20-30 real orcs used for close-ups and foreground and 50 humans/elves.
-Many shots were entirely CG (the orcs charging at Helm's Deep, the cavalry charge in RotK...)
-Landscape for the battle of Pelenor fields was entirely CG

So yes there were a bit more practical effects in LotR but why does the CGI stick out more in the Hobbit then ?
Because almost all of the shots are more at an epic scale. Take Gandalf's close up for example, in RotK the background was all blury, while here you get a real good sense of what's happening behind him. In this scene there are almost as many wide shots as in the entire Helm's Deep battle. PJ is just using is bigger budget.
On top of that this movie uses many "semi-wideshots" like at 0:40 . It means that the camera is far enough to see a lot of soldiers but still close enough to the point where you get a feeling of wether it is CGI or real. LotR movies only had very few of those shots, which, according to me, is a shame.

kinda sick an tired of people complaining about this book beeing slip into 3 movies... the book kinda had bad pacing, everything seemed to be really rushed and way to quick pased, plus we dont get to know anything on the dwarfes besides ther names with exception of thorin...The movies on the other hand take ther time to develop the charakters and  the story.

Every orc that is not in the wide shot of this scene is practical and even if it isn't it looks like it is and the scene is incredible and I'm so pleased that we are going to see a lot of fighting and different kinds of it and creatures like: orcs, goblins, some kind of uruks, half trolls, trolls, wargs, elks, battle rams, eagles, bats !

I don't know why, but I really like the scene with the trolls posing up on the hill behind the orc armies with that ogre commanding them.

There's just something about that scene that reminds me of the Mumakil from the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.

Whatever guys! A movie's a We get to be able to enjoy these movies because of Peter Jackson so let's not groan, but be thankful! Sure practical effects may look better, but it doesn't diminish the fact that they are going hard with this movie!

I have to admit it looks awesome! But one question, aren't those catapult- backpacks a little too advanced? I mean we're still talking pre-lotr...

Oh I see just take out Azog's optical telegraph machine banner thing and let his stupid troops get disoriented. Also aren't those trolls with the siege engines a bit too....cartoony?
