I think that the owner should pay attention for signs, just in case, and if there are signs, make sure you always have kitten milk on hand for this kind of situation and make sure to take the baby to get checked by the vet afterwards, if she doesn’t have enough milk it’s easy to fix, just make sure you have kitten milk on hand, supervise the father with the babies, and when it’s time to sleep make sure you have the babies in your bathroom inside the cabinet, make sure she’s comfortable and that you wear gloves while handling her young, unless she recognizes your sent as a family sent, this will allow you to be able to handle her young with no problems, in fact she might even bring you her kids to watch them for her while she eats and uses the restroom, cats are very perceptive and intelligent they will tell you when something is up, it’s still best to supervise the mother with her babies and see what she does, if the baby is sick, then there’s a slight chance it won’t survive, but if you don’t know which reason why she’s trying to eat her young, that’s why I said take the baby to the vet, to have him check, they can do a blood test, for any traces of what could be the issue, if the vet says it clear, then there’s issue is not having enough milk for her babies, so make sure you get kitten milk, and kitten dewormer, bc some young can be born with worms, and that’s one of the reasons the mother might try to eat her baby, bcs worms are highly contagious to the kittens, even your dogs if you have any, and worms make an animal very sick and malnourished, if untreated can lead to death, bc they can’t absorb the nutrients they are eating, mommy cats aren’t heartless trust me it hurts them when they have to, my cat when she had her babies, one of them got really sick and she didn’t have the heart to eat her, so she brought the baby to me, I took her to the vet, and they told me she has worms, and that i should start with kitten dewormer, bc she is so young, preferably use a dropper not a syringe, 2 drops is fine for the little one afterwards a few minutes feed her kitten milk, it was hard bc i had to help stimulate her in order for her to poo, she had her own area and I placed plastic wrap down on the floors and changed them every day, she had her own little place to nap, I made sure I had my cat sleep on the soft blanket for weeks, the mothers sent will help with distress, for the baby kittens it’s mandatory to make sure to wash the bedding and replace it with something that still smells like the mother, and then have the mother constantly lay with the blanket after washing for the next few weeks, the smell of the babies siblings and mother, will help it get healthy faster, and it’ll help the baby feel less lonely, make sure you wash you hands after touching and wear crocs wrapped in plastic wrap, making sure not to spread worm eggs, if you have gloves you can wear them, but it’s best of the baby receives physical touch while being treated. most of the kitten eating happens after a kitten has died. its an instinct. cats in the wild do it so the corpse wont attract predators.

My cat did not eat her sick kittens. She let them die. And when I buried them, she cried out looking for them :(

Yeah I still remember seeing the stray cat I was feeding ate her own kittens because she couldn't protect them from other stray cats. She was trying to hide them in the ironing room but my workmate closed the door so she maybe felt hopeless and ate them. Gosh I couldn't sleep well after witnessing such horror

I have been cat owner from last 8 years I have foster many cats i still have 11 cats n i always had mama cat but I never seen them eating their babies but when their babies die which always happens because cat whole liter never survive so when they die mama cat try to revive it n try and stay around that baby for some time n checks on it 😢 i have many videos of my mama cats where they r trying to wake up their dead babies

I read a story one time where a cat was just either confused or mentally stressed out or something. She ended up eating the entire litter one by one. The owner thought that she eventually stop and kept putting the survivors back with the mom…but nope she ate the entire litter. After the second or third one, I would’ve separated the remaining kittens.

Cat lover here; took in a stray many years ago & witnessed this basically, was pregnant unbeknownst to me at the time. Very young mother I believe too, birthed 3 undersized & I caught her eating one (stillborn or very prem) woke up next day to find other 2 completely vanished replaced by a full size kitten (size I expected others to be). Family bred domestic cats growing up so I'm well versed in kittens, turned out last born needed to be hand fed as mother cat wasn't producing milk. We had such a crazy bond
