I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. We have never stopped having a royal class. It just got replaced by business owners and politicians.

End legacy admissions. If they want to end affirmative action then no one should get preferential treatment because their daddy went to the same college

All education should be public. If the rich people think it sucks, then they can pay their fair share of taxes to fund the underfunded public schools.

As the offspring of a Yale professor, this really hit home with me. There's a powerful atmosphere of that comes with growing up in the shadow of Yale. I often think my childhood might have been better if my father took a job as a forest ranger out of college rather than teaching Yalies.

Cornell grad here: absolutely not worth the debt. I can count on one hand the number of times someone saw my Ivy diploma and gave me a job at an interview: 1 time. And it was for a veterinary tech job in Florida that paid minimum wage and had me working under a guy who was racist and conservative despite being Italian (by which i mean just a generation before him the country was EXTREMELY racist toward Italians such that it makes no sense for him to lord it over anybody but i digress). Dude literally called me to his office and commented on the fact that i spent a lot of my time at work talking with the ONE Black employee he had and that i would "think hard about who i want to be seen with". Nobody else has ever taken notice of the ivy league stamp. And if that's the kind of asshole who notices, no thanks, I'm good

The whole Ivy League is nothing more than a giant club for rich people to network with each other.

Im a student at very large, elite institution and its incredible the level of wealth concentrated here. Of my core friends I can think of 7 people who are the children of Fortune 500, C-suite excutives and the direct relatives of congressmen and governors. Sometimes I cant afford all my groceries, and they just don’t understand that. Its maddening.

Edit: This is not to say im even a low income student, my parents are upper middle class and can afford to pay for my tuition and my sisters, which I am immensely grateful for, but this was a MASSIVE sacrifice they made to allow me to graduate debt free . But I still have to work to pay for rent, utilities, and food, as do many of my peers, and its striking how that is entirely inconceivable to many of my extremely wealthy friends. They’re all incredibly kind, caring kids, but a bit out of touch with most people’s financial experiences. When I was a kid the financial crisis almost made me homeless, a fear many of them never have had to face.

I cant imagine what its like for low/middle income families going through this.

Nepotism is a hell of a drug, and classism is entrenched in (esp) Ivy League institutions. I'll add that obviously education and academic research are vital aspects of society, but accessibility and equality in educational institutions is an ongoing fight.

I’m a Columbia graduate. I went there because I’m from Harlem. So home was just a 20 minute walk away. I also got a full ride scholarship via the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Also I basically created my own nepotism. As a kid I would sit in own lectures at Columbia & I got to know a few professors. So I was able to get them to write letters of recommendation for me. The funny thing is that I had my mind set on UNC, because I’m a Tar Heels fan. The main thing I hated was the white kids asking me where they can get drugs from. I knew where they could get it from, but I was offended that they assumed a Black man knew where to get it from.

I went to the Ivy League as someone who wasn't in the legacy student, upper-class club. It was Columbia. Not once did I feel welcome on that campus. My time at my local community college was far better, with professors who I could tell cared about teaching for its own sake. The Ivy League is a giant rich boy's club pretending to be an ivory tower of pristine knowledge. I'm going to my local state university for grad school now, and it's more of a home than Columbia ever could be.

I was accepted to an Ivy on a full scholarship. I rejected it when i visited and every bridge was covered with fencing to prevent people from jumping. There was no way I'd graduate with my mental health in tact.

Whenever someone tells you education isn't important, remember: The uber rich folks wouldn't gatekeep it from us, working drones, if it wasn't valuable.
Whoever gets the chance to be on top, will never want other people to enjoy the top as well.

I would argue that the Ivy League should be abolished if for no other reason than its graduates are so goddamn annoying

I want to add that there's also a stigma about students choosing to go to a community college before even GOING to a University. They tend to get treated differently from Ivy League students even though community colleges are way more affordable, and they give students a chance to do better academically without the courseload being too much.

A friend of mine, graduate of a humble state school, landed a Wall Street job. He worked with a bunch of Ivy Leaguerers. I asked him if they were smarter. He said they all thought they were, had connections, but every weekend he beat all of them at poker.

Its not *what* you know, its *who* you know.

Having a prestigious title and being able to network with their wealthy friends (and the parents of those wealthy friends) is why ivy league graduates are so successful

The elitism is a huge problem. We can’t say America is a meritocracy when people can’t even get into these ivy leagues without the silver spoon and mommy and daddy’s help. That’s not merit, that’s privilege.

This is crazy to me. The Ivy League is a world away from my reality. I was born poor and still am. I went to public school and dropped out of college. I've struggled with addiction and homelessness, I am always broke, and I'm always behind on bills. The idea of rich people out there that can spend my rent in an hour on something meaningless, and spend so much money to put their kids into college, is insane to me. I have never lived that kind of life. I've never known anyone who did. Its insane to me what our rulers do.
