Imagine wasting 175K at a Ivy School and you can't define what a Woman is.

In the 1950s something like 90% of CEOs didn't have college degrees. It wasn't until Ivy League Harvard University consultants convinced everyone the corporations would be better off with a structure of degreed people. Look at the mess we are in now with manufacturing. Many parents, including my own, told their kids manufacturing was a dirty job. A lot of people put themselves way into debt for college when their talents could have made them more money elsewhere.

It appears to me that the value of an Ivy League degree primarily lies in the social, business, political, etc. connections these students make. The old expression comes to mind, "It's not what you know, but who you know."

I love how Thomas Sowell debunks a whole boatloads of myths.

Finished my BA in a small, private Christian liberal arts school. Most classes consisted of less than 10 students, a PhD. instructor, and wide open discussion about any topic. I couldn't imagine a better learning environment.

To a large degree, the "value" of the diploma that you earn is determined by the work that you put into it, regardless of which school you attend.

God bless our National Treasure, Thomas Sowell, and the fact he shares his wisdom liberally.

I love how Dr. Sowell has been pumping out facts the same sarcastic tone for over 50 years. He would've been an incredible comedian.

I had the credentials to go to an Ivy League school and for a variety of reasons decided not to. In my mid 20s I had dated a girl who ended up deeply associated with Harvard, and I met many graduate students/researchers there. I was astounded at how thoroughly out of touch with reality most of them were, with many of them being quite dumb, to put it bluntly.

As my family had put a lot of pressure on me to go to an Ivy League school I had harbored a little doubt that I had made the right decision in not doing this years earlier. After spending a good deal of time at Harvard any of the small regret I had of not going to an Ivy League school dissipated quickly, and I ended up being very glad I avoided the Ivy Leagues.

In my observation the majority of those who go to an Ivy League school fall into two categories: The children of the wealthy, or those who are brainwashed to deeply believe in the myth that an Ivy League degree is the best degree. A myth that is propagated by the wealthy, who always seek to maintain or increase their power. Neither of these groups tend to have many people in them with great working brains, and both of these groups tend to be pretty corrupt. Unfortunately, they do have a great influence on our society, and this influence is absolutely for the worse.

The main advantage to an Ivy League degree is getting to be a member of the education has almost nothing to do with it

If there's a particular field you're interested in, take the first two years of basic requirements at a local community college where tuition is cheaper. Live at home. Then apply to the school that offers the specialty you're interested in pursuing for your career. This is a great way to save, yet obtain your educational career goal.

There is a line from the Movie Biloxi Blues where Matthew Broderick's character asks one of his fellow recruits who is a bit of a nerd what course of action he would recommend for someone trying to become an intellectual. He said start with the entire second floor of the library. I have several degrees and while school helped me develop good study habits and helped make me a better writer, the old saying still applies. Reading is fundamental. Or, to borrow from Bob Dylan, you don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.

An ivy league degree is good for getting your FIRST job. After that, people expect performance - degree or no degree.

The whole idea about going to an Ivy League institution is status and contacts. It gives you a head start.

I went to Franklin College in Franklin, Indiana where my classes were all taught by full professors or associate professors. Class sizes were sometimes so small that it was 5 students and the professor. My largest class was probably my English Composition class with about 20 of us. Keep your Ivy league degree.

It's been said, and is said in this house, that the road to hell is paved with degrees from Harvard.
