This was sat on my shelf for about 5 years, perhaps longer. I recently travelled to Thailand from the UK and began to read on a whim - 13 hours later I'd finished the whole book.

In summary, I found it to be a completely engaging read, with lots of palpable twists, some extremely plausible and the third act of masterful delivery that found me manifesting multiple scenes in my head as I was transported through the complex interweaving of well crafted plot and dialogue.

A fantastic book that will most definitely be re-read by me soon. Also, a very enlightening book about the banality of life and the importance of truly being present, among other things...

Loved you review! And absolutely loved that book when I read it some years ago. What other readings would you recommend? I would love to know what other books were granted 5 stars!!

Before I listen to your review until the end, I must confess you'd break my heart if you hadn't liked this book. It was one of my favourites from last year and I plan to re-read soon.

I didn't like the book at all, so unrealistic, that a middle-aged married woman to hv an affair with her daughter's boyfriend, and that boyfriend commit suicide because her girlfriend's mother has become pregnant, and on top of that, that the mother should leave money, and the dairy of her daughter's boyfriend who had committed suicide, for the ex-boyfriend of her daughter, and finally at the end that first boyfriend feel guilty for his past young age behaviour, utterly devoid of meaning and rationality. If we want to read a book concerning old age, regret, or time that passes it would be better to try Marcel Proust's, In Search of Time Past, but of course it requires more time and effort, but at least you don't ask yourself what a waste of time, or what on earth was that!!!!

I'm a huge Sense of an Ending fan! There are some great blogs about the ending. I was absolutely wanting to re-read as soon as I finished. I've read it three times now.. I just believe there are some clues in there that will help figure out what actually happened.. because I still am not sure I trust what I made out of it.

Although its not as big of a punch, it was similar in the quality of writing, I highly recommend a book I read this year called So Long See You Tomorrow by William Maxwell. Also a short book and plays with the author's own memory of something that happened when he was a child.

Adding it to my TBR list. Read the synopsis and it sounds like an interesting read.

I was just thinking of this book that I read a couple of years ago. I realized I want to read it again. It made me so happy to hear how much you loved this book. I felt as deeply about this book as you. Thank you again for reminding me the feeling I had when I read this book! Can you recommend another book that makes you feel this satisfied and happy about a book?

The author, Barnes, is the editor to the literary journal, n + 1. Last I heard from some few years ago.

Sounds amazing! I am going away for nearly a month and am trying to plan what books to pack... this sounds very entertaining to read on a flight.

I loved this book and it surprised me so much, especially since I bought it because of the cover, knowing I had hated the only other books I had read by the author until that time. Now I am much more curious about the author, I just started with the wrong book of his.

Hola Juan! De Julian Barnes he leído Arthur&George y me pareció muy original. Me apunto el que tú recomiendas porque hace tiempo que no leo nada de este autor. Saludos!

Interesting that you gave this five stars, I've heard mixed reviews across the board for this one! It seems to be quite a marmite book. The main reason I've considered reading it is because it's quite short haha. You're making me want to pick it up more than anyone else though! Will stick it on my mental TBR list for sure 👍🏻
