Sanyo Eneloop Ni-Mh battery charger unboxing

The famous Sanyo Eneloop battery line was fairly recently refreshed, and I cheaply ordered a charger with 4 new batteries to save buying loads of standard batteries! These are low self-discharge NiMh (Nickle-Metal Hydride) batteries, which claim up to 1500 charges and 75% capacity even after 3 years of moderate use. No wonder they have been crowned the king of batteries time and time again!

At any point did you mention the Charge Time for the 4 AA Batteries?

This particular model (MQN04) turns off after 16 hours of charging, so is just on a simple timer. There is a higher end version (MQR06) that has a processor controlled smart charge system, that turns off charging for each individual battery once they are done charging.

You make a good point, but that still doesnt get around the difficulty and hazard of opening it as well as the waste of materials used. It is good for display as you say though.

Although this does work, you need some pretty huge scissors, which I can't always find. Even then, the end result is still sharp and can require extra cutting if the product inside is an awkward shape. I much prefer cardboard boxes, and they are more recyclable too!

Its a charger with some batteries in it. You wouldn't be watching an unboxing of something so simple if you didn't want to know more about the product itself. Or if you are referring to charge time, then yes.

Is this a smart charger or have some sort of overcharge protection?

It's highly unlikely you'll ever come close to '1500' cycles, before the battery becomes unfit for service. Why? Let's assume 3 charges/week x 52 weeks/year = 156 charges/year x 9 years = 1404 charges.
Eneloop is still a Nimh battery, albeit low self discharge. This means, before you reach 8, let alone 9 or 10 years, there's a high probability of the eneloop reaching high internal resistance and either refusing to charge, or be at such a degraded capacity that it's not worth it.

This type of packaging is wasteful, but I do not understand why people claim it is hard to open.

Get a pair of scissors. cut along the seams a few cm inwards around the packaging and hey presto.

Do you need to go at it with your fingers?

It is terrible. Manufacturers really need to do away with this type of packaging because its wasteful and irritating. As well as dangerous to open!

packaging is the WORST I've ever encountered.

The packaging is cheap displays the actual product well and insures thieves cant open it in store then hide it in clothing to steal it which keeps cost down as its products packed this way are harder to steal so every one stop bitching about this style of packaging
