When you're going through a tough time it's really hard to imagine yourself on the other side of it. When I was in high school, I was severely depressed, and that legitimately impacted my ability to even think about future prospects: I doubted I'd make it to university, much less a job. One of the ways I dealt with it was setting smaller goals - if I couldn't imagine myself a year forward, at least I knew I'd have to make it to a meeting with my friend in a week, a concert in two weeks and a football game in a month. If I didn't want to live, I still wanted to listen to some band's next album or watch the next season of a show. So you break the years into months into weeks into days and it's infinitely easier to just make it from one point to another.
