Orbital Cellulitis an ocular emergency!

I had a great case involving orbital cellulitis a few weeks ago and so I thought this would be a good topic to discuss.

There are many differentials when discussing infections of and around the eye, such as:
1. Stye (hordeolum)
2. Chalazion
3. Blepharitis
4. dacryoadenitis
5. dacryocystitis
6. Pre-septal cellulitis
7. Orbital cellulitis

We'll mainly be discussing orbital cellulitis, including the presentation, workup, and management.

I know this is an older video but it was very informative. I was diagnosed with orbital cellulitis in my right eye 2 years ago. I receive treatment and it got better! It returned in my right eye about 2 months ago!

Thank you for this very informative video. I have had symptoms stick could be explained by these conditions. I have been tested for Graves disease and that was negative. My symptoms started with protrusion of the eyeball. I also get a squishy feeling on the sides and behind my eye. It feels like extreme sinus build up. My vision in the eye that is affected crosses or more accurately Trax upward causing a crossing effect in my vision. The ophthalmologist that I seen does not know how to explain the condition. they have recommended that I go see other doctors to try to figure out what is going on. to your knowledge is there any ophthalmologist in Louisiana that may have knowledge of this condition that could see me?

I had a sore eye socket & eye after hyperbaric chamber use. The eye was very bloodshot, improved over days, but there was residual pain around the eye socket. Puzzled about the cause, and the fact that I had large floaters in my vision, I used a small eye bath, and a SuperEyes usb microscope, to see if there was something unusual was in my tears (maybe a eye worm). I found there was no worms, but bunches of thin strands. After saline sinus rinses improved my symptoms, thought the sinus might be causing the eye socket problem. It turns out that there is a paper-thin bone (the Ethmoid) between the frontal sinus and the eye. The strands were actually mucus from a blocked frontal sinus, and when they crossed the front of my eye, I would see the floaters. A regular use of nasal decongestant (for 3 days) + lots of water (with a little electrolyte) + saline rinses, seem to be working to unblock the inflamed sinus opening into the nose, release the pressure which was pushing the infected mucus into the eye (the path of least resistance). It turns out you can go blind if you ignore this kind of infection.

Hi, my left eye showed normal stye-symptoms yesterday, then this morning I had swelling underneath with pain. I went to an urgent care and was prescribed erythromycin and an oral in case the erythromycin did not work. The doctor asked if I had blurred vision, to which I answered no. Then a few hours after, it was visibly worse and my vision was very blurry. When I have only my infected eye open, I can barely see words. I do have a astigmatism in that eye which makes it harder to pin point the bluriness, but it still is worse. Should I see how I do with the erythromycin before assuming its orbital cellulitis? My symptoms also include heavy discharge. Please let me know if my blurry vision might be cured with erythromycin, or if you think I shouldnt wait and should go back right away

I always catch some bad juju and so I woke up one day with one of my eyes swollen to the brim. I looked goofy but for anyone wondering, I took ibuprofen and literally sat a week in bed since my head usually hurts. Went away and im good for now, just recently got an ear infection so idk how to feel about my sinuses betraying me

I have this right now. Preseptal. About 12 hours I went to ER for treatment. I’m on antibiotics now. Dacrocystitis by the nose.

When on antibiotics, when can I expect improvement?

A loud crack, pop then pain from behind my left eye when I look up

That was the first thing I felt. Something burst behind left my eye deep in my skull.

My 1st MRI found polyps so had them removed over 20 years ago but I still get this weird pain eye and strange m&m size mucus discharge with a salty metal taste. I had balloon rhinoplasty. That didn't stop the dull annoying pain which makes me fell tired all the time. I look up and left I feel pain I push on my eye ball and it hurts. Is this orbital cellulitis? Last we was pain full now its just dull. I have my MRI from 2017 what am I looking for and which view should I look into to see if I have orbital cellulitis? Thanks
