I will never wear a necklace with my external mic ever again! Haha! Very sorry about all the clicking!

You’re correct. Every word! But you have to understand that the splat points is a selling point.

I WISH our coaches would take time to explain this in class. :)

I’m 15 classes into my new OTF membership and this video is great explanation of why to achieve the bell curve with heart rate and not get too focused on maximum # of splat points. Looking forward to next class!!

Love, love love this. I tend to be on the low side of splat points (typically 10-20 most days; I do give myself the 'I can slow down or lower the incline if I really want to after I hit 12 pts' incentive some days). I have literally walked out with only 0 or 1 splat points. . . but as long as I feel like I did just a little better at something, I consider it a win. I always have micro-victories I am working on -- lift a bit heavier weights, hold planks a bit longer and steadier, be able to power walk without holding on (I am always afraid of falling, broken many bones in my life), and so on. Seems like OTF works for me because I have unlimited personal challenges I can conquer within this format.

Literally had this EXACT convo w hubby on 9hr. drive thru MT. Splat points to OTF’rs should not be like Pokémon’s to, well, people who collect those. It’s quality over quantity, my friends. I love my zero red zone, 15 splat days. I’ve done my job, burned mucho calories and haven’t snapped a hamstring on the treadmill. Win✨win✨ is what I call that. Thanks Austin. Continue to be awesome. 🤩

This is really great advice. I always start on the treads because it’s so hard I usually want to get it over with. Haha! I definitely want my focus to be on getting stronger so I will start switching it up. 💪👌😁

Didn’t know the workouts were designed to start on the rower/floor. I have been always starting on the tread because I find myself hating the tread if I do it at the end of class. Will start alternating now. Thanks for the info!

Yes!!! My goal is to get 12 splat points. I used to feel like a failure if I didn't even get that much and then if I got MORE, I thought I was a rockstar. However, I felt depleted when I would get 20+. Now, I am happy with 12. I also change up where I start. Variety is the spice of life! 🧡

THANK you for this!! I see so much misinformation out there about splat points. I do wish all coaches would go over the stats during the stretching period, as so many people don't seem to be aware of the goal. Only one of our coaches does this. We also have a coach who gets very enthusiastic about how many splats the class achieved. I love his enthusiasm, but it always makes me cringe a bit.

Thank you so much for the information! I just started OTF. It’s a bit confusing. Love your enthusiasm & encouragement!

What helped me was a coach once saying that you're aiming for a pyramid (ie most time in green zone). I am mindful of splats, but certainly don't pursue more than 12! If that happens naturally, so be it

Fantastic advice, glad I generally start on the floor. They were sharing this on my studios Facebook page this week.

Great video (even with the mic/necklace debauchle!)
When a few people have asked me what to do first when they were starting up, I always tell them that I personally try to start on the floor/rower. I do try to start on the treads for Strength days (because of the inclines) but the mix of floor/row seems to really define the HIIT goal (blue/green on the floor, jump to orange on the rower, back down to green on the floor). Whereas on the treadmill once I’m in the orange the only thing that will bring me back down to green is walking. So in the middle of tread blocks that’s means 6 - 8 minutes of orange/red at a time. Obviously when you start OTF you are most likely going to be in the 30 - 50 splat area. I was between 40-50 almost every class for the first month or so. Then I got more fit, and that dropped to 30-40. Now I’m about 20-30, which feels about right. I also had to remember to tell the front desk to change my weight (because I lost so much in the first few months.) The system was thinking I was still at my starting weight.

Overall, people do this for different reasons, and I can understand WHY people seek splats. And if the quest for splats is what keeps you going back to help you with the #morelife mantra, then all the power to you! But in the end if you can bank your 12-20, you are in the same lane as the people in the 30s-40s. Like I said before in a previous reply to one of your videos ... “success is a journey, not a destination.”

Thank you! I'm new to Orange and I didn't know all this. I naturally started on the rower all the time because it's the most challenging for me and I wanted to be fresh on it.

Amen, the heart rate monitor and splat points are just a tool in the toolbox, not the end all be all...preach! 😊👊👍

I am new to the channel and OTF. I love competing with my wife for splat points and it keeps us pushing during class, but I watched this with her and maybe we are going about it all wrong. I usually start on the floor/row because I am a previous gym rat and prioritize weight lifting strength over cardio, but she starts on the treads. It is hard to slow down, because we have been pushing so hard that green zone or less HR seems to be “too weak.”

With that being said, when we go many days in a row, we don’t feel like we are giving it as much as we can because we are exhausted with pushing and no real recovery. Even though our splat number is climbing, I don’t feel our performance is improving (actually it is the opposite). I definitely don’t want to be sidelined with an injury as I love working out again after a 20 year absence (fatherhood, college, career, etc.). In my mind I am still young, but I better respect my body now that I am in my 40’s! Thanks for the tips, Coach!

I always start on the treds because I came from CrossFit where I lifting heavy and barely ran. I like giving it my all on the treds first since I’m still pretty strong on the floor, but I like the idea of switching it up. I’ll try that this week. 😄

I think we need to start “Blue/GreenTheory”.

I'm gonna agree with a few people on this video about not pushing your heart to that extreme every time you're in the gym. The heart can be overtrained like other muscles in the body. I do an 85% training during HIIT on the rowing machine or elliptical once a week for a total of like 7 to 10 min. Anymore than this feels like it would be damaging to the heart. I've read that the max benefit for the heart would be the equivalent to no more than 10 min miles for 45 to 60 min and beyond that, it can cause some damage. Is that the truth? I dont know. I do feel that pushing the heart every single day could cause some serious problems. I say keep cardio to 3 to 4 times a week at a pace that allows you to still have a conversation while slightly out of breath. This has allowed my resting heart rate to go from 80 to 90 bpm to now 50 to 60 bpm. That has made me feel very healthy and am able to outperform 90% of people out there in a cardio session.
